Hey guys!! I got a gift certificate to Guitar Center for CHRISTmas from my cousins and, while I was supposed to go today, I'm actually going tomorrow to possibly buy a Home Recording book. I would like to get one that is decently user friendly and is informative on the general basics of Home Recording, I.E. EQ'ing, mic placement basics, how to "properly" use a compressor (if there is such a way), etc. It can even be related to digital recording because I am very seriously thinking about selling my 4-track and using that money to buy a good recording sound card with and going digital. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

In CHRIST JESUS,

Brandon

Brandon my friend, this is a recording forum, not a church service. DO me a favor and check it at the door.

If you Believe in Christ that is cool. Same thing for Buddha, Allah, and Jerry Springer. But don't try to shove your beliefs in everyone eleses face when it clearly doesn't belong there.
Have a nice day,
Daniel

I asked Bruce (Blue Bear Sound) a similar question in another thread, I don't think he would mind me repeating him here -

"The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" and "The Mastering Engineer's Handbook" (both By Bobby Owsinski) have nothing to do with each other in terms of content, so you can read either one.... the Mixing one probably has more "hands-on" practical application stuff. The Mastering book is more a process description as opposed to a "how-to" type book.

Other titles that I think are essential reading for anyone interested in more serious recording techniques are:

Total Recording - Dave Moulton
Modern Recording Techniques - Huber & Runstein
Project Studios : A More Professional Approach - Philip Newell

i dont think anybody tried shoving anything in anyones face...we'll talking about a 17 yr old kid here.....all he wants is a recommendation on a book.....

Praise God!

Brandon, please ignore those "remarks"... :)

There are SOME nice people here....

Praise God for your heart! :)

Leeking

You asked for a book, I'll give you better than that. Go here my young friend and enjoy...

Just do me a favor and let John know how much you appreciate the site.

Also, stick around here and read as much as you can. This is a great site chock full of tasty knowledge.

Hello all!! Track Rat, FZmontanaDF, and Clark_Giswold: I understand this is not a church service. I merely want to express who I am and what I believe by my salutation. If I was preaching, then I would not blame you at all for telling me this (and I've been absolutely flamed for it before... heh... I do appreciate your politeness, respect, and maturity), but I'm not (yet... :) j/k). I am sorry if I have offended you, and by no means intend to, but I feel a sort of religious obligation, if you will. I don't do it because I have to, obviously, but my religion is something very near and dear to me and something that is very profound in my life and makes my life very, very enjoyable and meaningful. Not to say I don't have bad days or go through tough circumstances, but I think you understand what I'm saying. I request that you ignore it if you do not like it. I will "de-capitalize" it, though, to reduce emphasization (is that a word?? hehe). I have to ignore many things I do not like, both from a religious aspect and many other aspects. I respect you and your opinion, and in that I request that you do the same to me and my salutation. Thanks for the suggestions, RWhite... I'll write those down and look for them at GC. Thanks for your support, Gidge and Leeking. Hope everyone has an awesome day!!!

In Christ Jesus,

Brandon

Hey CMiller!! Thanks alot for the link... I'm heading that way now. :) Later!!

I find such pompous displays of Christianity both sacrilegious and personally offensive.

IM(not-so-humble)O, people like Godsguitarist and Leeking are one of the reasons we're fighting a war right now. Imperialism, religious and otherwise, is finally catching up with us. But I respect free speech and I've found that these sorts of arguments only lead to further dissention. I think uniting under the cause of home recording is the best we can all do...as much as I hate being PC and all that, I'd say sometimes checking some of your beliefs at the door (or at least keeping them out of your sig) can be a good thing.

With that said, I've never found a book about home recording that didn't focus too much on outdated gear/software/hardware - I'd look instead for a book that focuses on pro recording techniques that are independent of the gear used.

Dolemite, you are absolutely right about being outdated. I sometimes buy magazines since they are current or future oriented, but never books. As soon as you walk out the door its old technology.

But, that is why I linked to John Sayers' site. He is truly one of the real treasures of the Home Recording.com family. Not only is his site so full of info that your eyes will burst, he's one of the most knowledgeable guys to lurk around here and will ALWAYS answer your questions. If you see this, thanks John!

One last thing...remember, that the current war is not only about religion, but intollerance as well. I'm atheist, but I respect other's beliefs no matter how silly I believe them to be.

GOOD GRIEF!! There is A WHOLE LOT of info on that page!!!! Thanks alot, Cmiller. Thanks for the awesome advice on the whole gear/book thing, dolemite. I hadn't even thought about that, but will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again to all!! And check out that site... that rocks...

In Christ Jesus,

Brandon

Yeah...magazines are good. I usually end up spending a couple hours a month @ Barnes & Noble absorbing whatever I can from Pro Audio Review, Recording, Mix, EQ, EM, Guitar Player...etc. Many of these are online as well.

And of course people like John Sayers, Sjoko2, Bruce, RE, Harvey, Sonusman, etc. (I know I'm forgetting people) are great resources. I also make use of the archives of rec.audio.pro on Google Newsgroups. Best of all, you can access all this for free - can't be that!

Did you ever think about this:

in the name of nomenclature

Mmmmm, a post gone awry! How special and unusual!

i have noticed that Brandon never once responded to any of the stupidity launched at him....pretty wise for a 17 yr old......

so how can you say such a tolerant person is responsible for the war we are fighting now?.....ignorant people like yourself is the reason we are fighting a war.......

Imposing your values on others is not very tolerant last time I checked. I am not surprised he did not respond, as there is no defense for such actions.

Riiiiight, its those secular tendencies that really incite the Islamic fundamentalists...
