Has technology ruined your chops?

My DAW is making me a much better player and composer. I can listen much more critically to my recorded material than when listening to myself play in real time.

I love technology and there is no better time to be living than now. If today's recording technology had been available when I started playing 40 years ago, there is no doubt in my mind that I would be a much more advanced and better musician today.

I love the technology...it makes everything so easy on the recording an engineering part. I sequence all my drum tracks in ACID (which sounds 1000 times better than the old beat box I used in the 80s). BUT (and that's a BIG BUT) I always...and I mean ALWAYS play live tracks on top. No editing, No cut and paste, If I mess up, I start over and do it again. The technology should enhance your chops, not REPLACE them. :D

That's my story...and I'm stickin' to it.

Even though we are talking about guitars, I think my musical chops in general have improved through DAW use. I not only play guitar more, but I sing more as well. I don't believe in splicing little pieces in, so I end up recording whole sections over again. Because it is so quick and easy, I end up doing more takes until I get it right than I would with tape.

So I think it's all about how you use the equipment whether your musician skills improve or decline.

I"m the opposite. I hate to edit in parts, overdub, etc. So I practice my ass off to get it right the first time.. but it usually ends up being the 5th or 6th time.
