Has anyone made their own rack?

Just curious. I'm thinking about making my own since i'm a college student and am poor. :( And would rather put the money into something that will go into the rack then the rack itself. worth it?

Easy as pie. Just make sure to leave 19.5" in the rackspace. You can buy rackrails anywhere.

It's not difficult, but my father, who is as passionate about wood-working as we are about recording, helped me.
I'm going to have to get rid of that one when I move into the new place though.

Well.... I used to want to record, but then I found HR, and now I like to spend innordinate amounts of time here, which leads me to record nothing.:)
I have a bunch of synths and things that go de de de boom, de de boom. And some that go chickey oomph tss oomph tss oomph tss. And a really killer one that goes SCREEEEETHVVVVVVVMMMWASZHEEEEEEEEEEWW

The trick is to get them all to do it in time, and make it sound good. That's what I'm working on now. How about you?
 
I made mine from basic pine 1x12's and used 1x2's instead of metal rack rails. I use wood screws and rubber plumbing washers to screw in the gear. A light coat of varnish from a spray can and I'm good to go.

I made four of them; a five space, 2 seven space, and a 12 space slanted rack on casters. They aren't "furniture grade", but they look pretty good for being thrown together.

D-I-Y racks are relatively easy to make especially when universally sized as per subtractor prev'ly stated.

However, if you belong to the category titled Laz-ee @ss Procrastinators of which I'm Supreme Prezident, you find yourself
constantly purchasing pre-assembled rack units!!
 
I made my racks about a year ago when I actually had some of my gear just laying on top of my desk. The story is I got a new desk for my computer but after looking at it, it would fit all of my recording needs it measured out perfect for a three space top section above the desk and it had four of these sections so all I had to do was just put in rack rails and screws and that part was done the bottoms however took alot more work i had to cut the bars and shorten them to size weld them back together and then insert the rack rails for two 8 space racks on my left side one ontop of the other I will post a picture of this set-up as soon as I get my digital camera back from my cousin. The whole desk unit by it's self was $130 and the total for everything was around $180. I hope this helps out

Michael, Track Rat,
I noticed both of you guys are right up to the wall?

Does it give you a bass boost?

Michael you have Events are they 20/20? I ask because I have the PS8's. I had them situated on the short wall (17' length) about 18" out at equal triangle with position.The boost was confusing me. Recently I moved the monitors to 2.5 out from wall and the bass boost decreased.
That was my intent so I am getting a better idea of the bottom end.

Sorry to intrude on Daniel's original post, I finally registered after lurking for a while. But hey I've made a iso box for my puter and will soon be making a rack or 2, maybe even an integrated desk with racks on both sides;-)
 
Tonio, they're close but not right on the wall (about 14" off the wall). Yes, it does color the low end. I've just learned my system as to how bass translates in my room.
 
Tonio - Yes they are the Event 20/20 BAS.
They do sit closer to the wall than I like, but you have to work with what you got!
Being Katy-Cornered at the wall doesn't give the bass boost you would expect since the waves are deflected more.
John Sayers had something to say about that in a long forgotten thread.
