Has anyone got any experience with the Line 6 UX 8?

I've been orientating on the right soundcard for a while now, still haven't decided, I want to be sure to make the right choice.

As I'm also orientating on pre-amps I was searching old threads for tips.

Someone mentioned the Line 6 UX 8 there as a good pre-amp, so I googled it like about 30 others pre-amps and found out it's a pre-amp and soundcard in one.

It's 8 tracks simultanious, all XLR and jack, so on paper it's the best thing I've seen yet, but for $500 it all just seems to good to be true.

Anyone have any experience with this unit?

I've used the ux8 since May 08 and have had no problems whatsoever with it. However, initial setup was a bit tricky. A bandmate also bought one (at the same time) and has been having nothing but problems with his. Going over tomorrow to try and iron out some of the bugs.

Line 6 recommends that you don't use an on-board usb port so you should assume that you'll need to get a separate pci usb card. Originally I installed mine on an IBM P4 3 Ghz, needed the extra card. NOw its working fine on my toshiba duo laptop (obviously onboard usb).

If you do decide to get it, make sure that you run the line 6 monkey and get all of the updates.

The gear box vst plugins are cool, but I find they use a lot of cpu resources, haven't yet tried their new pod farm so I can't comment on that.

I"m basically "new" at this too, more of a drummer than anything else so I can't comment on the quality other than it has worked well for what I'm doing. I found the latency a bit of a pain when using all 8 channels. The reason I bought it was to record my drums on all 8 channels simultaneouly.

I also own a ux2, if you don't need all 8 channels, you might want to look into that.

Hi, thanks for the comment. No I don't want the UX 2, I want the flexibility of the 8 ins (with XLR, which is lacking on a number of soundcards)

My biggest worry is if the pre's are any good.

Anyone?

Just an FYI...

The problem with my bandmate's system was his usb drivers. Quick update (using windows update) and the problem was solved.
