Thier is an add for MXL 603 mics in the EQ Mag this month. It has Harvey Gerst quoted as saying they are a great mic or deal or something like that.

Interesting! Anyone else see it?

Out of curiosity, is Harvey sponsered by them? He does not like all of thier mics, but does like these in particular.

No, I'm not sponsered by Marshall (at least, according to my checkbook). About a year ago, I did review the Marshall mic line for rec.audio.pro, a newsgroup I hang out on, and that quote (if it's the "flat-out winner" quote) was what I thought of the Marshall MXL-603S and also would be accurate about the V67G as well.

Marshall called me a month or so ago and asked if they could use my quote in their ads. I told them yes, since it accurately expressed my feelings about the 603 and the V67G.

No money or products changed hands as a result of their using my quote, nor on the Sound Room or the FMR Audio web pages, where my reviews of those products are listed. The Marshalls I have, I bought.

In short. I liked those mics, said so, and gave them permission to freely use my statements in any manner they wished, as long as they quote me accurately. I haven't seen the ads yet. The fact that they quoted me is flattering, but at 65, I don't think my "15 minutes of fame" will go to my head.

Harvey, if we send you MXL mics will you autograph them for us? ;)

Why would you want to intentionally decrease the value of your microphones?

Hey Harvey, what's up?

I finally got my Marshall and the ECM-8000. A friend who travelled to the States is bringing them to me, along with a JStation. I'll get them on tuesday. Can't wait!

Cheers, Andrés

No disrespect

Hey Harvey, I meant no disrespect for the comment above.

While playing on the road I was sponsered by quite a few guitar oriented products. And quite literally every word I said about thier products, could be used as advertisement. Now they never did use anything that I know of but it was in the signed agreement anyway.

I just thought it was interesting that they used your quote in EQ mag. ( I think thats a great compliment to you)

You know I don't always agree with everything you say, but you obvoiusly know your Mic anatomy to the Nth degree. (anyone that missed Harvey's post on the differences in mics and size should look for it)

Well anyway Harvey good to see you getting some recognition. You know as well as I that you can work a lifetime in this industry and never be noticed.

None perceived, Joe, but it did give me a chance to go on record as to what the real deal was.

After 50 years in this business, pretty much everybody knows me anyway, and I usually get enough notice to satisfy my small needs for recognition (these days, anyway). It's hard for me to go to hear live music without running into something I've designed over the years, and that's pretty satisfying as well.

And it would be pretty boring if everybody agreed with me on everything, so I for one, am happy you're using your ears instead of mine. (Mine are pretty shot, anyways.)

I think that ad (which I still haven't seen) will be in Mix as well.

"And it would be pretty boring if everybody agreed with me on everything, so I for one, am happy you're using your ears instead of mine. (Mine are pretty shot, anyways.)"

Maybe they should use that as a qualifier for the MXL endorsement ;)

Now THAT would be funny. But I'm still doing okay, as long as it's loud enough.

What's funny is when I'm listening to a new band rehearse just before recording them, and I'll call out over the talkback something like, "Hey John, your A string and your D string are flat; Bill, your B and high E are flat, and Fred, bring your bass into the control room and let me do a fast intonation adjustment on that D string." They're always amazed I can hear all that while they're all playing at once.

My hearing these days "tests" pretty shitty, but I can hear little tweaks to eq very clearly. Low level hiss and hum are nonexistent for me, but my son has excellent hearing, so that's covered. And sometimes, my ears will suddenly pop open and I can hear everything again.

As far as my 603S mic evaluations, I just got the frequency response curves back from Stephen Paul, and they confirm what I heard when I first tested them - it's a damn nice mic for well under $100.

I'll check in MIX mag too

I've been recieving MIX, EQ and Electronic Musician complimentary for over 10 years I guess. (maybe not as long for the EM mag)

I just got the MIX rag in today. While reading it I'll see if I catch it in there as well.

As far as my ears, well the left ones is real good, but the right one needs help above 7K by about 25% or so.

I guess standing on stage in front of monitors as big as a house may have played a roll in this. On stage I use to stand on the right (facing the audiance) and always found myself turned sideways to watch the other members of the band. The right ear was under attack all the time.

Well, I designed the JBL musical instrument speakers back in the mid 60s, and then designed the old Acoustic Control amplifier line (with those blue horns that would tear your head off at 100 feet)in the late 60s to mid 70s, all while playing as a rock guitarist - that pretty well did in my ears.

I still think you should have held out for some compen$ation.

Let me be your agent next time. :)

While we are on the subject of ears, I want to pass along something a friend of mine turned me on to--ear candles. No BS! I swear! You can get 'em from health food places, usually. What they are is a hollow candle that you stick in your ear (cover your head with a paper plate with a hole cut in it). You burn the candle for around 10-15 minutes and it literally pulls wax out of your ears somehow. Have a friend monitor the candle to be safe.

I thought it was a load of crap until I tried it and cut open the remaining candle after the treatment. The amount of ear wax in it was amazing.

Again, I know this sounds like I'm pulling your leg, but these things are real and they work. They ought to sell a few pairs with each pair of new high end monitors we buy. I guess you have to trust me on this one.

While we are at it. Ive heard that if you hang yourself you will cure your erectile disfuntion.

Has anyone tried this? You see I have a friend that has tried everything and is at the end of his rope.;)

looneytunez--Thanks for the post. Damn, you can learn all kinds of things around here! I guess its back to the Debrox. Sorry to everyone for the misinformation. I stand corrected and thankfully so.

No problem! :) Just don't want to see anyone hurt themselves, or lose an eardrum.

Yes, 2000

Some people must hang themselves, while others are born "Hung"

Got Rope?
