Yeah, I think it's the best thing in the world, and I don't have a bong. Perhaps I need a bong.

I don't have a bong............
He sang the line "hits from the bong" in this track. It was half expected, so I enjoyed it.
What's the problem?

But it's a great piece of music, a breath of fresh air. *I love it when somebody just *does* something and doesn't repeat or imitate.

You're poking fun, right?

LOL @ quoting me. Nice touch, fellas.

Yay! I'm glad you guys enjoyed it :).

LOl... almost falling off the chair laughing.... :laughings:

Well done heat - now go stick it in the rap forum and see if anyone clicks it... :)

So, when it becomes a hit, have you sorted out with dobro who owns the title?

Awesome. Thanks. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't pass muster in the actual rap forum, but to your point, no one would likely even bother to click...ironic?

Oh yeah, the title....hmmmm...

It's his, man. He made it shine.

I'll see you in court buddy! :D

Classic! Very strong vocal!

Nice. Thanks ray!

Don't quote me, but I'm fairly sure this is the best thing in the world.
My gut was singing hits from the bong,,,then YOU DID! Amazin.

It's Weird Al meets Cypress Hill meets Flight of the Conchords.

Now that made me laugh when I read it.

That's pretty much exactly how this turned out in my mind - equal parts of those 3 influences. I definitely love me some cypress hill, and that other, deeper voice I'm doing is directly modeled after Sen Dog from that group. Obviously my rap influences are somewhat dated...Would he be called an M.C., or is there a more specific name for the dudes that back up the main guys by interjecting "yeah"s and stuff?

I really liked Flight of the Conchords too, and although I wouldn't consciously try to sound like Weird Al, that's probably the 13 yr. old in me coming out. Thank you.

Haha! Sweet.
The Weird Al bit was more phrasing than anything.

I have no idea what those interjecting fellas are called. I'm categorically not cool/modern/interested. :p
Love it.

Yeah, I think it's the best thing in the world, and I don't have a bong. Perhaps I need a bong. Perhaps the youngins need an education. Perhaps I'm a garden variety ahole. But it's a great piece of music, a breath of fresh air. I love it when somebody just *does* something and doesn't repeat or imitate.

I have several. A couple of the old school plastic ones from the '80's are just collecting dust, but I recently picked up a nice ceramic one at a shop in Burlington VT that looks just like a vase! I'm really glad you liked this one dobro. Your title and chorus idea were just too good to pass up. I used your parallel compression ideas on the lead vocals here too - I think it helps them cut through, so thanks for that.

Steen's right though, this really does bear a resemblance to hits from the bong (which I covered once years ago), so not so unique as it might seem :o.
Lines like, "click, click, click like a gat goes the mouse..." were directly inspired by stuff that cypress hill would say.

Hey, I was actually commenting on the first mix. I'd listened a few times after you'd posted, but didn't get chance to reply. I then posted based on what I'd heard on those listens without hitting play again/seeing the new mix. Just listening to the new one now - it does sound quite different, more like one of your songs if that makes any sense. Did you add more stuff or just remove some of the layers? I'm hearing parts I don't remember from the first time and can't recall whether it's new or just opened up by the removals?

Thanks for mentioning that. I was a little disappointed when I read you saying, "don't bother...making those changes...", when I already had! I like it better this way...with more drop outs and changes and stuff. No, I didn't add any new content. I just chose certain guitar parts to come and go throughout the track, leaving the remaining ones to poke through a little more and hopefully add interest. I also went back and actually trimmed the in-between bits on all tracks like I normally do on a real song, and I spent some time doing EQ on each track for better separation.

Ha, that reminded me of this clip and it's too good an opportunity not to post it up :D

That was pretty funny. Thanks for posting that. My son and I listened and he got what was going on there, even though he's not yet familiar with NWA.

Love it.

I tried googling it, with no luck. I was hoping that you and I could become modern (in a 1991 kind of way :)) with this knowledge, but I guess we'll have to remain uninformed and uncool on that subject.

Unless we inadvertently set a trend, I think we've had our day. :p

Hahahahaha........listened to it with the phones.........laughed so hard I farted.........and not softly............according to my wife.

Oh my...my apologies to your wife!

That would make a great snippet for a promo for this "album"...Rolling Stone says, "...laughed so hard I farted".

Brilliant! :laughings:

Since this is already kind of making the rounds credits wise, send it off to Beck and offer partial rights(with clause that not a thing be changed)....get paid.

Although I dig your more usual style of offerings, I think this is my favorite yet. :thumbs up:

Awesome. Thanks Mick.

It's funny to think of this as a favorite especially knowing how little work went into it compared to my normal tunes. But I'll say this, I have a lot of respect for actual rappers being able to control their breath throughout long verses. That's what I find so difficult. You have to quickly gasp for air at every opportunity. I really just completely ran out of gas by the end of the 1st verse here! So, I guess no so easy as it might seem...thanks again!

That's exactly how most of my songs work out. I get the most positive feedback on songs that I put little to no effort into.

This one is really funny and you pretty much nailed the personality of the click seeker.

The mix seems super hot and very squashed, and I actually like it that way. It sounds like an analog recording gone way into the red. Very cool overall.

Man, I love the second version. The siren sound at the start gives it that real ghetto feel.

Dropping more links than a drone drops bombs, I'm a phenom still living with my mom.

That's the most brilliant line ever.

Boy, what a bit of mixing does. The second version sounds a lot more like your normal stuff. The mix is an identity as much as the music is I reckon, never really would have believed that until I got into this. I dig both versions equally I have to say, but I like all the changes you made to the second version.

FYI, you got 449 views, 30 replies. Dobro got 278 views, 13 replies. You click whore. LOL.

Man, that was completely awesome. I wouldn't change a thing.

I'm still laughing, though it is cuz my son has his pants at sphincter level, while I'm cranking your tune, and he thinks he looks cool. lol

Thanks Greg. So, I guess the lesson for those just starting out is...don't put much into it :)!

Yeah, I've heard some of your, "I had some time today so I just knocked this out..." mixes. Often amazing stuff.

This did get squashed, didn't it? Partly intentionally, but also a bit mysterious to me. No sense of proper "mastering" here yet. The soundcloud display (waveform?) barely changes throughout the whole track! I know you hate rap and all, so thanks for listening :).

Cool. Thanks girl! Yes, I am all about crushing the competition with massive click counts. It can be tough in this rap game. I'm glad you like the 2nd mix. I much prefer it myself just for the variation alone. You know where those "sirens" come from?...more cassette loops, this time from old guitar tracks from old casesstte recordings of mine. Making loops is hard with the stand-alone 'cause you have to eyeball everything...but it's kind of fun!

Thanks jimmy - hoping this was good for a laugh.

Too late now, but I would have loved to work a sphincter rhyme in there somewhere...how about,

"Pants hangin' down to my sphincter. My bald ass shining like the dome on Colonel Klink sir."?

Ok, maybe not...:o :D

F*ucking crafty - but I got no idea what a stand-alone is. I'm guessing you're not talking about making loops with some guy that's always standing alone in a corner of your studio. :D

You're definitely the Yoda of cassette loop manipulation. I'd seriously love to get my hands on some of those weird sound you make.

Enlighten you I will...

A stand-alone is just a generic term for an all-in-one multitracker, in my case, a Roland VS-2400. Instead of using a computer with a bunch of different software and an interface, I use a stand-alone multitracker that combines most features all into one package. Like a cassette portastudio or a digital portastudio with a hard drive rather than tape. You can see both of mine (the tascam cassette machine on the left, and the roland on the right) in the song photo for this on soundcloud (although it's tiny!).

To make loops I just transfer old cassette tracks to the roland (always having to play with the pitch as I never had 2 tapes that ran at exactly the same speed), and then I cut little sections of audio and try to visually get them the right length (one bar, two bars, whatever). I then copy one section and paste it 30 times or whatever the length of the track is. Then I go back and erase the sections I don't want. While I don't know for sure, I'm guessing there are more accurate/easier ways to make loops with a PC or something, but I don't know how. It's actually more fun than I make it sound!

Ha! Hilarious. You and dobro are like Lennon & McCartney.... or maybe Goffin & King... or maybe more like Leopold & Loeb I dunno.
Appropriately squashed for the genre. I really liked 'Let 'Em Sink' too, but didn't make in here for a quality response. Keep it up!

Feel the Force! That sounds wicked fun, wish I had a stand-alone to play with. Be fun mushing up all my old tapes. I'd love to listen to some of the 'talking shit' tapes me and my best friend used to make, but I don't even have a tape player. Is there a way to copy stuff from cassette to computer using an el-cheapo tape player/walkman?

Cool. Lenin & McCarthy maybe? Thanks for checking it out. I know how much you dig rap and stuff...I'm not 100% sure what I did to squash it so much, but I kind of think it sounds cool that way. At least on this. I'll have to look at what I did for comp and limiting at the end, 'cause I wouldn't normally want to do that to a song I don't think.

I don't think there's anything I can do with this machine that one can't do with a PC, it's just a little simpler and intuitive for me this way.

I don't know what sort of set up you have, but I would start by finding a cable that would allow connection from the output of the tape player to an input on your interface? Not sure how the levels and stuff work on that? There are some threads in the analog only forum about transferring tapes to PC, so you might check that out. Myself, I have all 8 tape outs from the tascam going directly into the line ins on the roland. I have also transferred cassettes direct to CD with a CD recorder, but even used, those can be a little pricey - especially if it's just to transfer a few tapes.

You could do it really easily frits. Get a cheapo tape player and buy a 3.5mm jack to 3.5mm jack for a couple of quid. Plug one end into the headphone socket of your walkman and the other in to something like the microphone socket of your pc/laptop. Find a nice non-clippy volume, hit record on your DAW and then press play on the walkman.
