A stand-alone is just a generic term for an all-in-one multitracker, in my case, a Roland VS-2400. Instead of using a computer with a bunch of different software and an interface, I use a stand-alone multitracker that combines most features all into one package. Like a cassette portastudio or a digital portastudio with a hard drive rather than tape. You can see both of mine (the tascam cassette machine on the left, and the roland on the right) in the song photo for this on soundcloud (although it's tiny!).
To make loops I just transfer old cassette tracks to the roland (always having to play with the pitch as I never had 2 tapes that ran at exactly the same speed), and then I cut little sections of audio and try to visually get them the right length (one bar, two bars, whatever). I then copy one section and paste it 30 times or whatever the length of the track is. Then I go back and erase the sections I don't want. While I don't know for sure, I'm guessing there are more accurate/easier ways to make loops with a PC or something, but I don't know how. It's actually more fun than I make it sound!
