Wrote this about 3 years ago and only have an old, crappy recording of it. So since I've just been sitting around with a bad head cold I thought I'd redo it for shits and grins since it requires no vocals. I can't hear worth a fuck either right now, so the mix is probably all over the place, but what the hell. Let me know what it needs, please.

And while you're at my Reverbnation page, please sign up for the mailing list if you haven't already. It's on the left side of the screen and takes 5 seconds. I won't spam you - ever. I promise. It's just for updates and shit and info on my upcoming album.

Thanks,
Greg.

The professionalism of your music never ceases to amaze me Greg.

Fantastic work. Sounds like something out Pulp Fiction :D

The only thing that bothered me was the drum rhythm in the shuffley parts. Felt like it was too slow or something. I think the up-tempo feel should carry through them parts.

The toms sound amazing. The reverb is very well applied. Everything sounds great.

I wish I could hear it...:(

Sounds good. Groovy music, baby.
Reverbnation page looks cool. I might have to sigh up.

Isn't that pretty much the definition of spam???? :D :D :D:laughings:

First off....

That bass is on fucking point (break, lol) for this tune. Seriosuly. I could give it or take with your other stuff (personal pref only not that its worng)

but for this....

Fuckin' Stellar. Totally makes the song.

Could very easily be mistaken for a Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet tune...

How many guitar tracks you got going on in there? Superbly executed.

No comment on teh drums......

Lol. Yeah, I guess it is. Thanks Ramrod. :D

What I mean is I'm not gonna send out pointless emails for every little thing. I haven't even used my mailing list yet. I haven't sent any emails. I'm only planning on using it for when the album is finished.

Thanks man. It's 4 basic rhythm tracks, two tremelo tracks, and the "vocal" guitar track.

Nice. sounds pretty much flawless for that much going on.

Thanks dude. It was pretty hard to mix that many similar sounding guitar tracks and have it sound clear and defined. And with my plugged ears I can hear levels, but not really any crazy frequencies, so I was flying blind. :o

Grrr

:D It was just a minor thing anyway IMO, and normally I'm very picky about mixes.

The Ventures used a lot of shuffle like 4/4 to 6/8 changes in their songs. Walk Don't Run has one, Perfidia, etc. If it's good enough for them, it's for damn sure good enough for me. :D

Never listened to 'em, and I don't listen to a lot of surf music either, which probably had an effect on my opinion :)

...even deafened by snot, your performance and mixing credentials remain untarnished! You suck :D (green w/envy)

Thank you Greg for giving me some great tonal references for my own, continued, mixing education.

I'm gonna have to rip you off a bit while I'm figuring out what to add to my 'surf-esqe-lite' tune.

I'd love to know your 'work flow', DAW habits, tricks and tips, etc. I've gathered a few from your posts. Always trying to learn.

oh, yea, almost forgot....the song was great, yadda, yadda...the drums sounds, guitar tones, bass line...perfect...blah, blah.. [Insert over-the-top praise here] :D :D :D :D

The shuffle is standard with surf.

Philgag, think of it like palm muting in a metal tune.

Picture a metal song with no palm muting....

It ain't right.

That's cool. I've always loved surf guitar music. I had a burger and beer with Dick Dale one time. The thing with surf is that it's pretty easy to play, and if you do it right and get the sound right, it sounds like you really know what you're doing. Delay and spring reverbs are your friend. Even a simple song like "Wipeout" will wow the clueless masses if you play it right. :D

Haha, thanks. I don't know what you mean by work flow, but if you have a specific question, just ask. I try to answer everything.

Great tune, Greg. Guitars sound fabulous, as always... Drums are right on..

However, I think I understand what Phil is saying about the shuffle. I think the shuffle should stay, but there's something wrong with it. To me, the "shuffle" part of the ride cymbal (the slightly off-beat beat) isn't shuffley enough. It seems half-way between a shuffle and straight-beat.

If possible, I'd just re-do one of those shuffle sections, really emphasizing the dead space right before the "da-ding" on your ride, and see if that sounds better. (Wow, I really hope that made sense)...

Other than that, everything's crystal.

Thanks PI.

How do you emphasize a dead space? :laughings:

heh... By waiting until you hit the next beat. Instead of hitting the straight 8th beat, wait a 16th longer.

Very tasty. Catchy hooks, great guitar and bass work. Did you play all the instruments?

Still trying to decide whether I like the kinda "metalish" bass drum sound. I guess it updates the whole surf thing, but I'd lean more toward a "thud" than a "thwack" for that genre.

Isn't that what it's doing? I don't know about notes and shit.
TING-TING-ting-ting-TING-ting-ting-TING-ting-ting :p

Thanks, yeah I do everything.

I hear ya on the kick. I went back and forth with thud vs attack. I just liked it this way better. If it was authentic you wouldn't hear the kick at all. :p
