 Can anyone make sense of this?
It seems that someone has had all of their posts, either willingly or not, deleted...
Ed's posts omitted in this thread...

So which is preferable?
Recording as hot as possible (as close to 0dB)?
Recording at a volume relative to the tracks desired level in the mix?

Preserving bit depth initially (while tracking), or leaving the track unmanipulated by software after (during mixing)?

*EDIT* Now I've found a thread where recommended tracking level is -12dB on all tracks, in keeping with "Recording at a volume relative to the tracks level in the mix"

Okay, NOW I have to get some work done...

And here all this time I thought "fixing it in the mix" didn't apply to levels during tracking...

another informative thread

{South Park monlogue} You know guys, I learned something today... :D

This opens a whole new realm of confusion, trial and terror.

Some? Like the article and every one of his posts....?

I'm going to officially retitle "trial and error".
I will forever hereafter refer to is as "trial and terror".
This is much more fitting, IMO.

it seems like you answered your own questions ;)

my take on it all...is it just depends on what you want to do and what kind of person you are. lol
some people will argue that you MUST leave yourself headroom, and should never come near 0dbFS. others will argue that they want to take advantage of every bit they can. in the analog world (tape machines), people like the saturation that occurrs when you're peaking the meters really hot....and there are others who also will try and leave the faders at unity because the more gain or reduction that you add means that it passes through more circuitry adding more noise.

but i do like that whole post about fix in the tracking...not the mix.

Well... I guess I'm happy for you!

So, this is yet another one of the issues which has never been definitively determined?

BTW which thread were you referring to? The "omitted posts" thread, with links to articles that no longer exist, or the other one?

If you want to preserve as much dynamic range as possible, you will record as hot as you can without "overs." And, generally speaking, a few overs are not the end of the world.

I agree with this totally, Ryan.

When I track, I try to get my signal as loud as possible without clipping in the little MR-8. I have a Yamaha MG10/2 mixer now, and I can't believe the sonic difference it has made in my recordings. If I have time, I will post the song I am working on with my friend Chris (he's singing). It's like night and day with my recordings now.

I guess that rule applies to real signal chains.
Circuitry noise inherent to cheap stuff might make all the difference, making it necessary to track as hot as possible.

I just wonder at what point in signal chain evolution it becomes advantageous to track at levels that are closer to 0dB (or wherever the fader actually ends up) in the DAW.

So is "Ed" THE "Ed"? Jakes dad "Ed"?
I assume it is.

I think you are correct. I know that the higher end stuff it's not necessary to track hot. I do it because of the -10dB that consumer gear is set at, as opposed to the +4dB of pro gear. In my mind, 0dB on consumer gear is still -10dB, but I could be wrong (I'm no expert, you know that).

And I think "Ed" is who you think it is...

I feel like an actress in a soap opera, whispering about illegitimate Jakes real dad Ed, and how he was driven from town by the towns people in the middle of the night...

I'm gonna write a song right now called "Ed's Threads" in protest.

I feel gay.

Give us back Ed's threads, you phuckers
Give us back Ed's threads...
There's just blank spaces where info was...
and all those links are dead.
