Long distance collabs are difficult. You did it with three far-flung contributors (and musicians at that!!) scattered across three continents; no easy task. So congrats are in order just to have completed the project. This sounds real good, I've got no nitpicks.

I hear early 70's influences, but can't pinpoint it. For sure there was one band that you cut your teeth on growing up and it shows up in this song. King Crimson is the first to come to mind, but I don't think that's it. This is going to drive me nuts until I figure out who this sounds similar to. :( ..... :D

Chilli,
You did it with three far-flung contributors (and musicians at that!!) - Yep, a drummer in Texas, A lead guitarist in Alberta & vocalist /melody writer somewhere in Germany (near Hanover I think). Each one superb in his art.
No easy task. Actually, it was pretty easy to be honest. I sent each chap the basics of the song bed and said do what you want to do. Each had in mind a continuation of The Master with out it being part 2 - so similar in aesthetic and a recognizable sound.
So congrats are in order just to have completed the project. Well, that goes down to the generosity of the HR community doesn't it. I will take the crangrats with a humble nod as all compliments should be recieved with the grace in which they're given.
I'm pretty happy with it I must own. That Jan from finemastering did such an excellent job of glueing it together deserves reiteration as well.
King Crimson was a big influence on me - I was pogoing to the Damned records wearing flares, long hair & a beard before going home to play Gentle Giant on the cassette player. Incongruous I know but I just couldn't burn down the museum - even after taking a last look.
I leave you to try and nut out the other things that seeped through my ears into my sponge.
Thanks for your generosity.

King Crimson comes to my mind as well.

Sounds good, nice balance... love the drum sound, snare is just slightly loud though, it eats the vocal momentarily when the vocal is softer - making some things harder to understand. Sits real nice later on though.

Yeah, man... This song is just sweet. Well-done all around. Mix and final production sound just as good as anything on the radio now-a-days (in some cases, much better). A+. Thank you for doing this, and sharing.

crankyelbow,
Thanks mate. It was a long task getting this finished - easy to record but hard to get the mix & then master just right. Personally I like the snare level but I get what you mean - I suppose it's a matter of taste. The previous song, with the same collaborators, has the vocals a little above the music & that wasn't to all tastes - I loved it though. Cheers!
kc,
You know there are expectations for the next one having a bit of clowntime involved.
PI,
Thanks for your kind words. The lyrics had to come out of me dribbling & squealing - but that was 30 years ago. It was nice to join them with some music provided by such a fine collaborative group. The ME did a grand job as well.

Very cool song, top notch performances! I'm sort of hearing a bit of Bowie/Eno and also bits of early Genesis-Peter Gabriel era-the real Genesis in my opinion. The rhythm guitar has a 60's chime, bass is strong & solid, and the lead fills are 70's style sound. Gregs drumming is definitely fuller and modern but fits in well. Joe is a single man choir as usual.

Gerry's guitar solo itself very much reminds me of Steve Hackett with early Genesis, very smooth and nicely unpredictable-it like it a lot!

Anthony,
You're right - top notch stuff from Joe, gerry & Greg. I defy any excrement to remain dull & coarsely textured after those blokes have had their way with it.
Is there really a post Gabriel Genesis? To be honest I'm not fussed on post Genesis gabriel either but together, as a groups they were something special.
I'm sure Gerry'll take the Hackett compliment in his stride.
I'm serioulsy pleased you like the tune.

Good stuff, Ray. I echo the comments regarding Bowie. It's always nice when a collab comes together.

Yes , great job Ray...totally get the Diamond Dogs era Bowie vibe.....great playing by all involved, nice full balanced mix...even on the click stream.....nice bass playing!

Casey,
Thanks. This one took a few moments to record and then 6 months to mix and master but it was worth it as the tracks the gents put together were/are simply stunning.
Queeps,
DDogs is such a cool LP. I remember trying to write a rock opera after listening to it. I didn't get very far. Maybe this is my strike back. Thanks for the kind words. The bass came through the stem mastering process particularly well.

I don't have anything to add, constructively, but I will say I'm on my 4th listen in a row. I really dig the vocal harmonies and choir-y vibe, and the guitar solo, and the drums, and...

good stuff.

Thanks Clev. I'm glad you like it. I'm amused that you named checked all the parts I didn't play as being great!!!! I also know that I'm not much chop with my chops & runs - self awareness is a blessing. The point is, I agree Greg's drumming, Gerry's solos and Joe's melody & vocals are stellar and really make the song work. They certainly impressed me.
