Argh, I've got a very irritating problem. Check this out:

(short)

Ignoring the ugly scratch track in the background, and the stupid reverb (oops forgot to take it out), tell me what the HELL that is?

There is a definate distortion on the "h" of both "hey" and "here". What the hell is that? If you don't hear it right off, then try to listen for it...and crank things up a bit or put some phones on. It's driving me NUTS. I'm hearing it on every system I play it on. I've given this to about 3 people and only one of them kind of heard it.

I don't know any better, but I think it sounds like the mic wimping out. I can't get rid of it with EQ. I've swept the entire range and can't pinpoint it. I was able to sort of take some of the thunder out of it by cutting somewhere around 150-300hz, but argh...damnit, still there.

The chain was V67->ART Tube MP->Delta44. There is no digital clipping. I was singing about 4-6" from the V67, into a pop filter. The gain on the ART was probably half way up, but no where's near clipping. Took a close look at the waveform and nothing looks too out of the ordinary, except for a slight DC offset problem. Checked it out using some decent meters, and it appears to ramp upwards quickly from 40hz to 125hz on the 'h', but I'm not sure if that's it. I tried cutting the low end out completely and that didn't stop it so.................

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Crud.

Again, if you don't hear it, please try to...it's there, I promise! :(

You're obsessing Slack, - there's a subtle "edge" but it sounds fine.....

Take your meds! ;)

:D

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Seriously it makes me jump, and in my headphones it's just really super nasty. The MP3 encoding took some of the fire out of it, but it's still there I swear!

I just want to know what that is. Is it the mic? I really think it sounds horrible. It's definately not my voice, and I can hear a similar distortion on some "a" and "g" words as well. If it's the V67 then it's got to go. If it's just something I'm doing, then I'd like to figure out what it is. :(

I guess if Ed, Bruce, and Emeric don't think it's that bad then I can at least get away with using it, as it *of course* just had to be my best take, dangnabit :) Throwing the real guitar tracks in there takes a lot of the edge off thankfully.

Ah well, thanks for listening to it bruce!

I don't find it to be too bad either....maybe a little proximity effect becoming a little more noticeable on that portion...Then, I'd suspect the Art unit. I bought one out of curiosity, and returned it the next day. The thing was definately clipping without the clip light going on...and in general, I wasn't too fond of the unit either. Kinda like pluggin into my ProCo Rat with the distortion turned all the way off;)

I had some weird sounding problems with my ART until I changed the tube. Since then I've found it to be usable. My only other alternative is a Symetrix SX202 and to be honest, I'd rather use the ART for vocals than that thing. I haven't had much luck with the clip meter on the ART either, and I don't even use the stupid thing.

It could definately be the ART I suppose. I'm not seeing any visual signs of the preamp maxing out, however. And I know I didn't have the gain up mega high. Well I guess I'll just have to experiment.

Thanks mixmkr,

To me it sounds like proximity effect + preamp distortion. I would try backing off the mic and turning the gain down a bit (as if you couldn't figure that out ;) ).
