Guitars with this kind of tone

Hi,

I don't really have any experience with guitars, but would like to get one for basic recording / studio use - so the most important thing to me is the tone.

I like the tone of the electric guitar in the following clip (only 533kb):

http://www.zshare.net/audio/guitar-snippet-mp3.html

So was wondering what type of guitar was used on this, and would you be able to get this kind of tone (or similar - I'm after a 70s Jazz Funk kind of sound - like Shuggie Otis, etc...) from a cheapish model of around £150-250? Any recommendations?

Also, would pedals, strings, etc have much to do in getting the desired tone?

Thanks.

I would say that it would be impossible to tell you exactly what kind of guitar that was.

Thats my humble opinion - and it's possible that someone will be along shortly to try and prove me wrong.

But I will preempt them here - and call them a liar.

With that being said - if you're not a guitarist and don't know anything about guitars - and with your budget in mind - I would probably aim for something like a Squire Strat or an entry level Ibanez. If you got a little guitar modeler (pod) or something along those lines on top of that - you would be fairly versatile in terms of sound and it would be relatively inexpensive (compared to obtaining the gear to actually achieve different tones).

my 32 cents...

good luck and god speed

Yeah, it's defintely hard to tell anything from that clip, but I would say any strat-type guitar with single-coil pickups would be a good place to start for 70s funk.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm going to get a Line 6 Toneport UX2 anyway, so that should deal with the modelling needs...

And I'll look into Strat type guitars (with single-coil pickups)...

Another option might be to go for a 335 or similiar holowbody clone, you can usually pull off a mellow cleanish funky kind of thing with that.

Funny, we were jamming Crossroads at band practice last night and I thought to myself my 335s tone sound alot like that on the recording. Then I remember Clapton was playing a 335 when they recorded it instead of his usual strat.

I picked up a 30 or so year old 335 clone from vantage from someone on these boards for rediculously cheap. Put grovers on it, and gave it a set up and it is my new favorite guitar, making me even consider starting the long road of saving for a real (old) 335. Clean it sounds smoooooooooooooooottthhhh, turn the volume pot up past half for each pickup and it growls like crazy.

FUN!
