Guitarr: Direct Input, 1 mic or 2 mics?

Next week our band is going to start recording for the very first time and it's the first time I will mix it down etc.

What would be the better way to capture the sound of an electric guitarr?

1. Connect the amplifiers line-out (XLR) directly to the mixerboard.

2. Put a single mic (XLR) in front of the amplifier.

3. Put 2 mics (XLR) in front of the amplifier (like a triangle mic-amp-mic) to get some sort of stereo recording.

I will do some tests later next week but I'd appreciate some tips from your experiences.
 
definately mics. what kind of amp do you have? stereo miking usually isn't worth it on a guitar but combining two mic signals down to make one killer sound certainly is.
 
Since it's your first time recording, make it simple. Just use a single microphone in front of the speaker of the guitar amp. You should be able to get a great sound this way.
 
It is a "Pavey Triple XXX" 120W tube amplifier (I think it's called tube in english... :). Cabinets are two 4*12" Behringer.

The other guitarrist has a small crappy combo. I think we'll just use the same gear but a different guitarr for his recording.
 
Why not do one Mix with DI and another with 1 Mic on the cab. Or you can do both at the same time and adjust the mixer inputs and pan. Its good to experiment at first to see what works. Hell , its always good to experimnet unless your in a high dollar studio under the gun with limited funds-lol....
