MP3

Hey Fitz, Im sure you would know....How do I go about converting WAV to MP3? Wav files are much too big for internet as you suggested...especially if you're hooked up to the slowest phone line service in existence.

Trading tracks

They way I thought this track trading would work could be;

Say I do a tune in Cubase and want someone to do bass, I export the whole song as a wave file (without any bass in it of course) and convert it to mp3. Then someone downloads that and imports it into their program like Cubase/Cakewalk or whatever.

They do a bass track, and then they export ONLY the bass track as a mono mp3 and send it back. I import it into my song, and that's it! I can't see any timing problems arising, it's not like tape where the speed can fluctuate.

It would be cool if there was some place where people could post mp3's (or links to them) that need certain tracks done. People could browse through them and say, "yeah I could do a good lead solo for that!" A person who posted might get to choose from several submissions, then strike up a partnership or something.

Howdy gents, well....ah you've asked the wrong person about the MP3 thing. My computer is so slow..."how slow is it Rick?":D Kidding aside, I'm in the same boat as Reel Person- I'm all set up for analog although I have a digital mixer and all the software, I can't even use it till I get my new computer which my sister in law built for me. But shes holding it hostage untill I finish my wifes kitchen(her sister) Leverage you know! So my old 133(paid 4 grand in 98 for this piece of shit)just doesn't cut it. Coughs on an email!!! Ha! Needless to say I haven't gotten into the MP3 thing yet. Soon though.
Hey Toki, your a bass player huh! I have nothing but respect for you guys. Bass players have to be the most responsible person in the band. They are the glue. A band s most important player. Guitarists ARE wimpy:D They can drop a beat, make a note or chord mistake or quit playing altogeather, and the band keeps going as long as the bass player kicks ass. Which reminds me of a rhythm section I had once. Killer bass player. Suck ass drummer. The only way the bass player could keep the drummer in meter, was to threaten to kick his ass right on stage, every song!! And he would have done it too! Boy did that drummer learn quick. In one month, I had the best section in town!! Mofo of a bass player though. Kicked the band in the ass. He removed all the controls from his bass, cause he said he had more dynamics control with technique than hardware. Anyway, heres to ya!!
And sorry I couldn't answer your question Bdbdbuck. I'm ok with CAD and computers, but digital audio in em is something I haven't done much of. My computer just goes on strike.
fitz:D

Thats funny Toki987! You use BB? I just got Ver11. I use it for rough guide tracks as I can synch things with SMPTE. Man, you can get some hot stuff out of it. I like your count. I played with a band last year at a local music store "weekend warrior" thing.
You sign up and they assign you to a band but you don't know what your getting into.
The guys I got were "supposed" to be seasoned. Ha! They didn't even know how to count a tune. Even the drummer didn't know how to count with his sticks. Straightened them out the first night. No count, no play. Ha!

Opps, that was "in B flat, not BB. What a moron I can be.
Thats another pet peeve I have about some "rock guitarists" I've met. Their too damn lazy to learn the fretboard. I mean theres only 12 fucking notes!! DUH!! The band in weekend warriors didn't know flats from sharps, and only could play in A,D,G and E. I changed the keys to flats/sharps just to kick their butt. C# through em for a loop. Ha! By the time I got done with them, they knew the scale tone 7th chords in all keys! I think they were scared of me:D Little did they know then I did the best thing anybody could do for them.

Hey schenkerguy, you took the words out of my mouth. Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking. Of course, I can't do anything till I get my new computer. Mine sucks.

Ya'll do know that we're doing bunches of collabs over in the MP3 clinic don't you? I, myself, am on about 11 of them and have 5 or 6 more in the pipeline. The exporting and importing works fine if everyone is using a 'puter for recording. But many of us don't. I use a stand-alone recorder. So what we've been doing is.....someone will send me a track they want something added to. I'll record my tracks and send them back with the rhythm track panned hard left and the new track panned hard right. then they can use the rhythm side to sync it up and once it's synced, then the new track is in sync also. The cool thing about this is it will work with any kind of machine. You really could even do it with analog although syncing would be harder. We usually use MP3s as the rhythm track but once I have my parts down.....I'll usually mail it on a cd so you get the best sound.
Check over at the clinic and you'll find loads of examples of this. It's a fairly recent movement but it's growing.

Fitz,
Sorry that I called you Rick, You know my eyes aren't what they used to be:rolleyes: What you say about some guitarists is true. I've jammed with a lot of rock players that don't know where C# or anything else except chords like E A B etc... Yep. that C# is a hard one but a lot of people don't know how to find Db. HA!

Interenet collaboration sounds like a really good idea. I have a song that needs vocals and lyrics, I think I'll check out the mp3 clinic. As far as a wav to mp3 converter I have used Musicmatch and Goldwave. MMJB is free, but Goldwave is about $30.00.

Hey, Trotter

I agree with you - gigging in the early 60's must have been a special time. I ddi my first gig in 67' or maybe 66' - so I missed the really great time from 64' through 67'.

Although gigging in the late 60's and early 70's was pretty wild (I think, I can't remember much from 67' through about 74').

By the way, speaking of gigging at an advanced age, my dad was still gigging until he was 62 (maybe a little older). He was still doing 3 and 4 piece pick-up gigs (old standards, polkas, etc.). Eventually all his gigging buddies quit or died.

We use to exchange horror stories about gigging on the road. He had great stories about playing in the 20's and 30's at speakeasys and during prohibition. He was at clubs that were raided by cops and once at a club the was shot up by a rival gang. Musicians had to try to sneak out the back door with their gear without getting aressted or shot.

His gigging horror stories were always so much better then mine - perhaps in part since I probably can't remeber some of the wilder gigs!!!!

Sorry that I called you Rick,
Hey trotter, you can call me fitz, you can call me Rick, just don't call me useless!!:D
Had enough of that one from my ex!
Rick Fitz
Hey you know what the best time about playing in the 60's was? Hardly anyone played guitar. Now, there are a hundred million guitar players out there:p I wonder how many guitars are sold by fender alone each year. Tons I bet.

I'm 49 & up until this past March I was playing out almost every Saturday night. Started off playing R&R, went to country for about 10 years in 85 and now play a mixture. Used to be in one of the Beatle tribute bands. (I played the part of what John would have looked like had he lived & loved pizza & ice cream) Currently do a wide variety of stuff with my wife & a few friends at Legions and such. I really feel ancient when some 20 something comes up & sits in & plays rings around me. Gotta love that arthritis crap!
oh, to be 20 again!

You know who they used to call "Useless"?...

Ulyses S. Grant. That's true, no foolin'! I guess he had the last laugh on the people who called him that!

Anyway, I'm just doing my same ol' 'Davemania'-thing. Catch my latest musings at www.nowhereradio.com/davemania/singles

I only produced 3 songs, start-to-finish, in the year 2002,... unless I can squeeze another one in before New Year's, which is entirely possible. I had creative block and the general recording doldrums for much of this year, and I'm just now getting back into the swing of things. [Produced one in June/4-track, one in July/4-track, and the latest in November/8-track].

Thanx for asking, pls check my latest stuff, and t/y later.

WELCOME MAM

I too have played the vfw type scene in my distant past... different breed frequents those places. Sometimes it was great, others ugly. anyhoo, noticed you're from PA. where are you from Waynesboro? My son bought a house up there. It's only 90 mins. from where I live here in VA.

I am 46 playing at least 3 nights per week since I was 12 years old, and for the first time this year, I did a week long tour in New York, And I am invited back to the USA for a week touring in the Boston area.
Dont hold yourself back, there will always be those who will be greater or lesser than you no matter what age.
Just enjoy music thats what its all about.

Fitz,

It’s so true that there are many more guitarists today. When I started playing I new of only a few guitarists in my area. Now there’s probably a guitar player on every block. I’m sure that Fender probably sells millions of guitars, but I don’t care if they sell a billion. I will always love playing.

On the other hand there are a lot of musicians out there that don’t need an expensive studio to record their stuff. If you would have told me 20 years ago that I would be able to buy a pc for a little over $600.00 along with a soundcard and some software and could record over 20 tracks, I would have said your full of bs. Ok, the quality is not as good, but it meets my needs.

That’s what I love about having my own recording setup. Anything I want to do I have complete control over it; I can throw the rulebook out the window. It’s my landscape and I can paint it anyway I wish. Now that’s what I love about the advancements in technology.

Toki,

I noticed that you are from bama, ever play in B'ham?

Thanks, and a big right on to you. :D

Mikeh,

Talk about not remembering... I was playing a gig on a Friday night many years ago in B’ham Al, starting getting in the party mood, Next thing I remember is waking up in Florida over 300 miles away from where I was playing. Looked at the clock and was supposed to start playing in about 20 minutes. Yep, I remember very well not remembering. Huh?

Sometimes I wonder how I survived those times. :)

I played there back in the early 70`s, but I do only local stuff now when I pick. I`m in Enterprise, 'bout 20 min from Dothan.

To bdbdbuck,

Nope, not Waynseboro, but Harborcreek. Just outside of Erie along Lake Erie. Yep, VFW's & Legions can be interesting gigs but for the most part, alot of fun. Too old for the flashboxes & spandex scene.

Just enjoy music thats what its all about.

From one Irishman(usa though) to another, Howdy! Are you with a band or do you solo? Love to go to Ireland one of these days. See where "I'm" from. And BTW, I agree with ya!

(Hey, someone told me the prefix "fitz" added to a name meant "bastard son of"
is that true. Oh well, I've been called worse.:D )
