Guitar Tricks

I am going to tune the guitar so it plays an open chord on the strings behind the nut when strumed or picked, I'll record that chord and then retune it for the next chord, record it, and repeat the process, etc. It will take a while, but those nut chords might sound really cool mixed in. Thank you for the tip/idea. :)

speaking of tunings, my main acoustic is currently tuned to C. no, i mean EVERY string. C2C3C3C3C4C4 i think.

So, what do you do with it when it's tuned like that --- some kind of cranked multi-note slide lead noise?


Here's something I just tried that sounds strangely cool. Put a capbo on the 12 fret, retune, mic the neck. and play between the capbo and nut. It's wired but cool added in.

One of my fav tricks is when I'm playing slide (tuned in open A). When the song goes to the IV chord I strum the chord with the slide at the 5th fret, then touch the strings at the17 fret to get the harmonic and then slide up to the 17th fret. Sounds cool.

Here is a cool trick. Tune all the strings to the same pitch and play a solo using all six strings at the same time! Takes practice.
 
This forum is awesome! Thanks all for the tricks! Here's my contribution:

While hammering-on and pulling-off rapidly/repeatedly on a single string, push lightly on the whammy bar. Or push on the strings behind the nut with you pick hand.

Hammer-on's and Pull-offs combined with anything else sound awesome!

Double hammer ons and pull offs are easy to do on the G and B strings because they are only 4 notes apart.

Example in the G:
E|---------------
B|-0-1-3-5-7-8
G|-0-2-4-5-7-9
D|---------------
A|---------------
E|---------------

(Hammer-on/pull off the dual notes, or slide from the 5 to 7.)

Another trick on the B and G strings is the double bend. What makes this trick great is that the strings are physically bent the same distance, but 1 goes up a half step and the other a full step. (Important Note: This only works with the unwound G string. Wound G strings like those found in an acoustic string set will not bend correctly. I often put an old G string from my electric on my acoustic for this reason.)

Double Bend example in the Em pentatonic:
E|---------------
B|-2 b 3-------
G|-2 b 4-------
D|---------------
A|---------------
E|---------------

Another advanced technique is a prebend release on one string while bending another. (1 bend down, 1 up.) With alternate tunings, the notes can start or stop at the same pitch.

I like open A mostly, but that trick will work with any open tuning.

With a floyd rose:
Use the trem to slide up into notes - just press it down a little and pick as you let it up gently - sounds great if done subtley - anyone remember Vinnie Moore - he used to do it a ton. not that he was subtle though:D

You can make some great noises by just pushing down the bar until all the strings are slack and moving the strings with your left hand

Hook your bar under one of the strings and let go! wild

tap the bar onto the pickup magnets

Just to look cool - divebomb open strings using your Left hand

With a crybaby wah:
Plug it in the wrong way (guitar into output, input to amp) with your guitars volume down all the way - slowly increase the volume and listen to the squeal, the pitch of which is controlled by your volume knob!

With a slide:
Select the front pickup and use the slide over the pickup - go back and forth and the pickup will "hear" different ends of the neck

With no gizmos whatsoever:
Try bending 2 different notes at the same time - groovy for steel effects - listen to Jerry Donoghue for the master of this. Damn hard

Pull the B string over the edge of the fretboard!

Hit the guitar body with your fist on the upper bout (actually works better on bass though) while fretting chord/note

Lean into your amp and blow air across the strings to encourage feedback

Fret a chord and tap the back of the neck with the knuckles of your right hand - etherial

Muted strings (with left or right hand) really make those funky/heavy riffs (a la the Theme from Shaft or anything by Extreme) sound funky

Effects Trick.

This is an effects pedal trick, not a guitar trick, but it sounds pretty weird.

You need a Moreley Wah, and a echo.

Turn on the echo, unplug the morley wah, as the power drains off the wah it makes a loud beeeeooooooop sound that sounds cool through the echo/delay.

I have no idea how to use that in a song, but it sure gets peoples attention!
