Guitar tones.

First of all im not a guitar player so i struggle with these things. Im using a line 6 setup: amp, pod and ux2. The sound im looking for is a sort of prodigy/mindless self indulgence heavy sound. I thought it would be easy and it would work out right if i just put loads of gain and overdrive on it but doesnt sound right. If anyone is familiar with the tone im on about i could use some help

I am trying to remember Prodigy's guitar sound.... It was along the lines of Nine Inch Nails if I recall. ? Well NIN would do stuff like take a distortion pedal and go right into the board. ie, no amp, no cabinet sims, nothing. Maybe some effects on top - double it, added a stereo effect, maybe a hint of reverb to smooth it out while still providing that harsh and sharp in your face wall of sound.

Not familliar with NIN sound but gunna have a listen now. I've got a roland OD2 somewhere so might see if i can work it with that.

Try a gate after the distortion so that the sound abruptly cuts out when you stop playing.
