Guitar speakers?

I used to own an old Marshall cabinet real vintage greenbacks in it. Rocked that thing pretty hard with a VHT Pitbull and a Carvin MTS 3200. Got a lot of compliments on my sound too.
Then I plugged the head into my buddies Mesa Boogie 4x12 slanted cab and I was blown away by the clarity.
In retrospect - I think my cabinet was rickety too - and I think that had a lot to do with it - but after hearing my sound and tone through that Mesa cab (which was very very sturdy) I was sold on the whole package.

(*In a nice turn of events - I was able to sell just the greeback speakers out of that old Marshall cab for 3 times what I paid for the whole thing. The speakers themselves were gray - which some hippy was willing to pay big bucks for).

I sat in with my friends band once. I use a 70's marshall head and cab(pretty beat up) with reissue greenbacks. They were "made in englands" not china like they are now. My friend has a jcm800 and a newer 1960 cab with g12t's and at the end of the night while we were packing up he compared his head through each cab. My cab was noticebly flatter sounding and for some reason, quite a bit louder than his. (More efficient speakers?)His cab was more "scooped" than mine with more brittle highs. For a heavy sounding rig, his would probably do better. I do more of just a hard rock/ blues style and mine would definitely sound better for that. The actual cab you're using will contribute also. I've heard that some of the newer Marshall cabs use some particle board. I've had mine open, and it's all plywood which would be more resonant for mids and highs I think.

I also use Vintage 30's. They are not as harsh as the G12's. :) G12's are great for live and cutting through the mix though.

Thanks very much all.
Vintage 30s I will definetly look into.
The sound I am ultimately looking for is smooth mids and high mids (not brittle like the G12t's, gadz) and also pure clarity also.

Any more ideas for speakers for getting clarity and smoothness?

Cheers,
Eck

I have been looking at the Mesa Celestion speakers and I am confused by the wattage and the ohmage. :S

I am using the Marshall 1960 cab with 16ohm setting and 4/8 stereo setting.
Can anyone teel me if any speaker ohmage and wattage will work or do I need to choose the right omage/wattage for my cab?

Cheers again,
Eck

What are the main differences between vintage 30's and G12T-75's?

I also want to change the speakers in my 4x12 cab. I was originally sold on the G12T-75's, as my old valvestate 8080 combo has one and it sounds great. Cuts through the mix quite nicely. Whereas my cab is so damn dark sounding when it's recorded. It suck's and it's really not doing my either of my heads justice at all. But I hear people prefer the vintage 30's, so what is the main difference.

Also, would I need to replace all the speakers in my cab or would that be overkill? I have heard such things but can't off the top of my head think of the explanation for it.

Vintage 30s are in Mesas! I never knew that.
What about the C90s? They better?

Cheers,
Eck

Your 1960 has two speaker jacks. One for 4 ohm mono and both for 8 ohm stereo. 16ohm rated speaker are in the cab. When you have speakers wired parrallel you divide by the number of speakers to match your amps rated ohms. The 1960 cabs left 2 speakers are wired parrallel and go to the jacks as well as the right two. The switch in the back allows you to run mono 4 ohm from a single source (one amp) and all the speakers are connected in parrallel (4/16=4). It also allows you to switch to stereo to use two amps running both at 8 ohms or one amp at 8 ohms to one side or the other to the corresponding speaker jack. Thus the switch in stereo isolates the two sides having the two left speakers wired in parrallel by them selves (2/16=8) as well as the right the same.

So to replace the speakers and have the wiring and switch setup to match the same way you would use 4 16 ohm speakers.

As far as wattage, If your amp is 50 watts and you are using all four speakers I would rate the wattage a step lower than the stock 75 watt speakers that were in there to closer match your amp. If your using a 100 watt amp I would stick to 75 watts approx. This is my personal take on this and is a matter of taste. I like to push the speaker toward the limits.

I know i am not the best guy to explain things but i know how this works.

Get hellatones from Avatar speakers. http://www.avatarspeakers.com/
These are stock Vintage 30s (Hellatone 60) that they break in for you.

I had a terrific buying experience, they are cheaper than you will find them for even used on ebay, and it is a cool small US business.

Good luck, .

IMO, the Vintage 30's are more of a mid-ranged sound, where the 75's are a little more scooped in the mid.

Thats awsome the samples.
Thats my setup. PRS with JCM2000 :)

The GT75s are pretty muddy arent they!
Vintage 30s are mid range based. Sound really clear.
I like the Greenback sound.
The V30s do sound vintage! Nice.

+1 to this. Great company. My band's other guitarist just got a quad of the Hellatone 60s and they sound marvelous.
