hey guys im looking for a peice of software with no additional equipment ie foot pedals and that to simulate an amp sound for me. I've read how you can plug your guitar directly into the computers sound card and have it output distortion and other cool effects which can be used for recording, any suggestions of software that can do this?

Overloud's TH-1 is the best thing out there. I've only played with the demo but if you get a more realistic distorted guitar tone out of Amplitube or Guitar Rig versus TH-1, I'll be amazed.

Voxengo's Boogex is pretty cool - comes with amp sims and cabinet/mics sims too AND it's FREE.
Guitar Rig 2 is very versatile with choices of amps, mics, cabs, and a wide range of effects but I've only tinkered with it and have not recorded with it as yet.

Also you can use either a dedicated VST host or DAW software to host VST plugins. Use its ability to use VST plugins to make it act like modelling software.

For instance, you can grab Kristal Audio Engine for free and use its LiveIn feature to act as an amp for your guitar or bass. Then go to www.kvraudio.com and find some guitar modeling plugins for free, load them into the VST plugin slots on a channel in Kristal, and there you go. All for free.

If that falls short of your expectations, then maybe start looking at commercial plugins or modelling software.

All great suggestions thanks loads! Ive been using Overlouds TH1 and its a great peice of software. Ive also been messing around with VST pluggins and Kristal. But with every piece of software I've noticed the same problem. How do i record the sound-out rather than the sound-in? For example when i plug my guitar into the computer and try to capture a distorted track it only seems to record the sound-in which is the clean tone pre the simulation.

So my question is how do you record the sound-out after its been emulated by a program or VST plugin?
