Guitar Rig

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here has used Native Instruments "Guitar Rig" 1 or 2 software?

I have seen nothing but great reviews around the place, but i was wondering how good this thing really is and if it does come close to replicating the sound of real amps,mics and effects?

I've used it - in fact I was using it last night at a mate who's just got Guitar Rig 2.0.

He loved it but I'll be honest with you, it's not as good as a POD or for that matter a real amp. It does a good job of emulating amps and effects and has a great range of presets (some of them truly suck though) that can be used aswell as really in-depth manipulation of things like mic's, mic placement, etc but as great as it is, it is very clear to the ears that it's a DI'd guitar.

So unless you particularly want that ever-so-slightly piercing sound (well, it grates with me at least) I would recomend against getting it. Except for rough tracking - would be good for that, then overdub real parts to actually use obviously.
 
I own the software and i think its bad ass it has its place in recording studio, but as far as replacing a nice guitar setup its along way off. It will be awile before i stop micing my cabnet and turn the power off on my trusty triple rectifier. that being said Guitar Rig does have alot of cool options. i like the clean tone sounds you can come up with, but of course its a little lacking in the ballz dept.
 
Here's one for ya's... it's more money but Worth it... either a TriAxis or Recto Recording Pre Amp... unless you have a good cab room to mic up amps and turn them to 11 Nigel then go direct... i agree that software amp simulators still kindda suck... and yes Pod2.0 is still the best sounding modeler out their... but if yo uwant even better tones... go with either of the two i first mentioned... and you get double for it... you have a great Live pre amp for your guitar rig and awesome studio guitar gear that won't get you evicted from your landlord or wife! lol
 
one more thing.. unless you really know how to mic up and record live guitars... stay with some of the presets on say the Pod for awhile... they are developed by pros for the sole purpose of recording direct.
 
I've used GR 1 and 2 and absolutely love them. GR 2 has some new amps that have already come in handy. Native Instruments also makes another amp sim called "Guitar Combos" that I actually find myself using more than Guitar Rig. "Combos" have three amp version that are all top notch (they are also way less cpu intensive). They just don't have delays and effects built in but you can add those later.

I have to record direct at night so I don't wake up the neighborhood so they work great. I even get compliments on how rad my guitar sounds are. I also have used Amplitube, the Pod and a couple of other amp sims. The Native Instruments stuff has beat them all.
