Guitar Rig 4 a suitable allternative to owning a crappy amp?

you've got to be kidding me.

He didn't actually say he wasn't gonna pay for it .... he simply said he felt a free try-out should be standard.
Everyone assumes he's not gonna pay for it but that's not the same thing as him saying so and certainly not proof.

So now we're gonna ban people after reading their minds and making assumptions?

That's absurd!

"I will pay for it if it makes me money/ it has to pay for itself*" is the standard pirate cop out.

*Thats what he said.

Lol. That's true. He did say that.
I don't care ...... THAT shouldn't get him banned.
So now we're gonna police everyones' private behavior?

And it's STILL not the same as saying he wasn't gonna pay for it. It's STILL making an assumption.

I don't know. I know that discussing pirated stuff is taboo. I don't think he knew it though.

It's in TOS, and this subject has come up many times before, with people "bragging" about how they got their software without paying for it. Maybe he didn't know that, considering how vocal he was about making a point that he didn't really care.

But:

A) If you're going to do something that's illegal (which is what pirating is), at least don't go on bragging about it.

B) Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense.

oh well then .............. if it's in the TOS he's toast.

Wow, I kinda feel bad someone got banned for posting on a thread I made...... But uh,

Soo...

Guitar Rig 4 huh?

Good Stuff it sounds like!

You guys all know I've been hard-assed about keeping software pirates out of here. No way do I want to make this place a haven for hackers and the like. The quality of the forum will die in a day if hackers feel they can get help for their stolen warez here. They'll all flood this place with their garbage, we don't need that. And I have no sympathy for a thief. I haven't yet looked to see who banned FoulPhil or for how long, but if it's temporary, he should consider himself lucky. I always permanently ban a hacker.

^truth.
Chili laying down the law!!
Kudos!

I've just read this entire thread from start to present. Right is right. Wrong is wrong. Stealing is wrong. Piracy is stealing. We can't support that coming or going, so in my mind: dat-be-dat. Chili, you da man!

Regarding the original subject, I have to say that a debate isn't really a debate if everybody takes the same side, and unless I missed it, nobody has spoken up for the wonder of nature that is well made tube amp with a guitar plugged into it... so here goes:

My first amp was a Crate 1x12 like the one the OP mentions, purchased in about 1982. Crate amps of that era were built into little pine boxes that actually looked like shippping "Crates". I played that amp all through high school and college. I continued to play it (carefully) even after it took to shocking the piss out of me if I touched my strings and any part of the chassis at the same time... until it was stolen. ~25 years later I still get satisfaction out of imagining the first time the SOB that stole it actually went to play it! :). Anyway, I was playing in a blues band at the time, and the other guitar player loaned me a Fender Bassman head and 2x12 cabinet. Talk about getting religion!!!! Sure I had read about tube amps but I was too po' to think about buying one. How had I played guitar for so long and never known that such beautiful things as this existed?!?!? I've been a certified tone freak and a bit of a tube amp snob ever since.

Now... I WON'T claim that I can HEAR the difference on playback after recording, but I WILL say that I can FEEL the difference while I'm playing. A bold statement considering that I don't even know what Guitar Rig 4 is, so I should clarify. My experience is limited to modelling amps that I've played (Champ XD, whatever Fender's modern Vibrolux modeller is exactly called, and the Fender Princeton recording amp (I thinkg that's a modeller, but it might not be)). Mostly, though, my reference point is a Line 6 Spider Valve III that I own (Pod-like preamp, with a Bassman clone tube power amp, more or less). I've recorded that amp both direct and with a mic, and I've recorded a Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp, and a 59 Deluxe clone that I built. They all sound great when you listen back, but while I'm actually playing the line 6, it just doesn't feel even remotely in the same league as the other two, especially the Deluxe clone. The sound doesn't interact with what my fingers are doing in the same way. It's hard to describe, but my son who at 19 is every bit the guitar play I am says the same thing. There's a feeling to playing through a tube amp that isn't there with solid state amps or modellers that I've tried. I played a gig through a rented late 60s twin with really old tubes in it once about 5 years ago.... joy, joy, joy!!!

So, to come to a point, like so many things, I think maybe it depends on what you want to do. If you are a guitar player first and foremost (no offense to multi-instrumentalists, I'm one too, but if I'm gonna jam with friends or join a band it will be on guitar), you need an amp, and if you really want to enjoy the experience of playing that amp, I submit you want it to be a decent tube amp. I don't think you need to spend $2K, but much less than $1K isn't going to get it done. On the other hand if you are only looking for the recorded sound, or if your jamming with friends scenario won't be on guitar... well then why spend the money?

Why didnt you stop there ? This thread is about GR4 and its professed awesomeness. :)

Oh yeah! I don't think I've ever seen a software pirate last more than a few minutes here.
My hat is certainly off to the mods here at HR for that.

Except that this guy wasn't a spambot, wasn't sharing pirated software, wasn't a hacker, but he was just a regular contributing member that just didn't know better.

That sucks he was banned, a slap on the wrist wouldve been enough. Hes a valuable member and wasnt advocating piracy for anyone else as far as I read. Damn Ive seen several members post about "trying out" new software in here, read the polls, half the bloody site has at one point or another...

free foulphil, theres been far too much banning in here recently ;)
