Hello All,

Long time reader first time poster here. After checking out a couple YouTube videos, I've recently become interested in Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2. I'm wondering if any one on the forum has any expirence with it. The HR site search function isn't working for me for some reason. I know modelers are generally frowned upon next to a good tube amp and I own two good ones and at least a couple mods. I guess I've become smitten at the overall coolness factor of having all of that power to route FX (not that I'm too big on using FX) at the click of a mouse, get any sound possible and then control it all in real time. Is it all too good to be true 'cause it sure looks like fun?

If you aren't picky it'll get the job done and coming from me that's saying something. I'm a total tube snob and you'll find me constantly bashing modelers. However I've come to realize that recording a quality tube amp is just out of reach of some people and others don't really care about getting a top quality tone. So for people like that and for getting down ideas it's a wonderful tool. I think for most homerecorders it would be a cool tool to have around, and I've been using modelers more because I've actually been producing a couple of bands and it sucks trying to talk to the guitar player while he's wailing on a 100watt tube amp.

If you can get past the latency, it's a pretty neat toy and infinately tweakable. That's one of the biggest drawback to me, I tweak for hours and never really play anything. I think the idea of playing with one "live" is uber-cool, but not very sexy, and I don't think I could show up to a studio as a gun for hire and be taken seriously yet. Most engineers will accept a POD, but haven't come to grips with PLUGIN just yet.

Just go pickup a used GT3 or GT6 off of ebay, and youll have all the effects you could possibly want.

If you want it for the amp/speaker sims, then use a pod or the like.. Although, the GT 6 preamp/speakersims, are quite good.

I recently got NI Guitar Combos, which is a stripped down version of GR. It sounds great and is good enough for home demos.
Btw, a lot of Pete Anderson's stuff on the later Dwight Yoakum albums was done with Amp Farm - another software amp modeler. Not many people could tell. Sounds like a Strat or Tele cranked through a Twin or Deluxe to me.

guitar rig sounds waaaaayyy better than the pod for amp sim. guitar rig offers greater versatility and more accurate sounds. (i've ABed a lot of guitar rig's modeled amps with the real thing and it's the closest modeling plugin/hardware i've heard)

i use guitar rig a lot of the time if i'm doing film scoring or commercial work as i don't always have time to go out and find the perfect amp(s) for the project and then find good mic placements, the right mics, etc i think you get the picture. i also use guitar rig for demoing my own songs. it's a lot easier to get ideas recorded when i dont have to go through a lot of setup.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I didn't want to clutter the place up with a new one on the same topic.

With Native's recent price drop, I was thinking of going ahead and making the purchase. Do you guys still see GR2 as a useful tool? Is it pretty viable just as a sketch pad? I'm not looking for a whole hell of a lot in the way of effects, mostly just some extra "flavors" in the amp department. My only amp here at the house currently is a Blackface Deluxe Reverb, but sometimes I want something more.
I'm a bass player primarily, and do much more acoustic guitar than electric, so is this program worth the investment?

edit: I know GR2 uses it's own interface in the footcontroller, but FWIW I'm running a Motu Ultralite into a MacBook Pro w/ Digital Performer 5.1

Ahh, I did not see that. But $250-$350 vs. $500 is much more attractive for someone fresh out of college! The added amps and effects aren't that big a deal to me. Just mainly looking for some tonal variation.

$300-500 would buy a small tube combo, also for tonal variation.

I've tried them and would like to use them but have never overcome the latency issues. I would really like to use the Ampeg SVT vst for my bass.

I love the thing

I use it for my bass and guitar. I use it between my I/O and I have no latency. Never had an issue with it.
