anyone see it yet... it seeds players much like a tennis tourney or a march madness basketball deal then they are eliminated based on scores in different categories,it's a good effort but one that i think is flawed ...

first they are eliminated based on chops, tone, versatility, influence, body of work, and finally "the X factor".

on the surface i say that is fine but once you see the breakdown you see the flaws ,you have players going out in the first round for chops but the players they have advancing are virtually unheard of ,at least to me admittedly,i.e. 116 seed Richard Thompson beating 13 seed Eric Clapton or 109 seed Bill Frisell beating 20 seed Buddy guy .These guys may play circles around the higher seeds,it's not until three rounds later that influence or body of work come into play . I know that in sports champions come from the bottom all the time knock off top seeds, but, this is not sports and top seeds usually are there still after the one shot guy fades.

I think the idea they have is a good starting point but it needs to be fine tuned maybe rank them all in each categorie then go from there ...

one thing i can't believe is that Jack white (R.S. 17 all time) or Kurt Cobain are not to be found on the list <---preceeding was a joke ...peace

I thought it was neat, but I think that Greg Howe and Paul Gilbert should have done much better, and good shredders usually don't get the respect that they should in lists such as these.

Anyway, I was satisfied, it was a fun read. I'm glad that Mclaughlin did well. He's possibly my favorite guitarist.

I'm at a loss to figure our why Kurt Cobain should even be considered for a BEST guitarist list... Let's face it, your talkin' about a guy that could barely tune a guitar and you wanna put him with the likes of: Vai, Halen, Page, Clapton, Johnson, King, Vaughan, Hendrix, etc. etc. etc....

Cobain has NO business being even listed as a guitar great... Who in the hell makes up these polls anyway?

It's not that I have anything against Cobain... I like his music! It's just that the fact is, he was a hack guitarist at best! Cobain was a wonderful song writer... Let's remember him for what he was... NOT something he clearly wasn't.

just to clarify.....

the last remark in original post was a sarcastic one ...i agree Cobain was an artist wrote great songs ,hell he killed hair metal , he influenced alot of people but yeah not a shining guitar player the real guitar player in nirvana sat behind the drums, and as for jack white come on people ,again only one song that "dead leaves on the dirty ground" was cool but it didn't get alot of air play around here but a cool

Lesterpaul,

Yeah, I understood you were being sarcastic... my vent about Cobain was from the R. Stone 100 greatest guitarists list... where Cobain appeared quite high on the list (cannot remember what # he was)... Which I thought was totally comical.

I think that any such contests (best guitarist, best song, best band), are fucking stupid and pointless.

lists like this ....

always stir up letters to the editor, and, that is cool i think thats the best section of any mag or paper . i myself am against lists that cry "greatest ,best of " i mean it is art ,no matter how you come down whether its good art or bad art and i think art is there for the taking if you don't like it don't look ....now a list that says most influential i can get behind all day long because they could suck and be influential ,i mean truth be told i was influenced to pick up a guitar by the monkees when i was around 7 or 8 would mike nesmith make a best of lists ,no way, but as an influence i'm sure he may rank somewhere.there was a list like this a few years back where cobain was like th top 5 most influential and as much as i didn't like it i can see where he could garner that spot

i think...

"I thought it was neat, but I think that Greg Howe and Paul Gilbert should have done much better, and good shredders usually don't get the respect that they should in lists such as these."
i agree with you dark!

... + roy buchanan, marty friedman, jason becker, julio revueltas, brian may, vinnie moore... etc etc
