What is the best mic for under $150, to use to record an electric guitar?

take a look at the FAQs.

i think that might help.

short answer: sm57 or one of those new sennheiser e609s or an ev635a or an ev308/408/468... or others....

buy a few dynamics. that is my advice.

SM57 and a Studio projects B1 or MXL v67, about $160 for the two (assuming you have phantom power available for the condensors. These are not "the best" but they will give you a great set of options - close-mic with dynamic/close-mic with condensor/close mic with dynamic and room-mic with condensor...

And they're both useful for other sources as well.

Under $150 ?

Oktava MK319 $100, or ADK A-51 $140

Shure SM-57 $90, or Beta 57 $140

alright. i am taking this opportunity to do a check of the FAQ. here is the story of me finding what mic to use on electric guitar on the FAQ.

first i go to http://www.hr-faq.org/. i wish the address was easier to find. (no sticky, no link)

ok. first thing i notice, a page full of links. not very user friendly. you have to read a paragraph or so to get to what you want. also microphone theory is on top. makes logical sense... but does it make sense to the user? how many people are interested in microphone theory over microphone uses? in this case, it is a waste of important (upper left hand) space.

also i am a bit distracted by the buttons on top... should i click these or wade through all the text? i decide on the text.

at the very very bottom of my page is the line/link:
"I want to record electric guitar. What mic should I use?"

clicking on the link dips you down to this text:

"I want to record electric guitar. What mic should I use?
-The mike that generally gets called up again and again for miking guitar amps is the Shure SM57. If you're just getting in, this mic is probably the perfect thing to start out with.
-A [sennheiser] 421 will give you a little fuller tone, 57's a little more transparent. - dafduc"

fair enough. not exactly teeming with info.

conclusion: more info, better organized info needed. typical problems...

here is the meat of it. pretty hard to find all things considered though... i click on it.

i have an octava 319 and a sm57 and i've used them as an x-y pair. i know it sounds weird, but it really did sound good. i'll bet you could get both for $150.

There's not a lot that can be done with the interface. Frankly, there isn't any easy way to get things organized. There's lots of questions, and no easy place to put them besides putting them in the broad categories they are located in.

The table of contents is in an outline format, and I don't think it's too difficult to navigate. Point taken, though: there's a lot there.

As for the electric guitar entry, I completely agree. Time is a harsh mistress; theres a shitload of stuff to do, and I haven't gotten a lot of help (notable exceptions: crazydoc, dethska, mark7, chessrock). If you'd volunteer some time, I encourage you to write out a more informative entry.

This is the reason I chose not to refer this question to the FAQ. It wouldn't have helped...yet. However, there's a lot of information available, and easier to find than scrolling through flame wars and what have you on the BBS.

Thanks though-

Graham D.

I've mainly been using my SP C1 on electric guitar cabs lately. Not bad. I find the usual 57 against the grill to be too dull sounding for my taste.

re the FAQ:

in general i think it is great. dont get me wrong. just a little experiment. some quotes from this thread would be good.

the close up dynamic, farther off LDC trick is pretty common. also one in front and one in back is another common one...

in general kudos to grahamware for putting in an insane amount of work for a pretty thankless task.

thanks...

Don't sweat it - constructive criticism is much better to hear than 'i like it'! :D

Thanks!

as always

im putting my vote in for the Ev-635a. Seems to be the one i constantly pick over the 57. They are usually cheaper on ebay than a 57 as well.

The Shure SM57 is a "must have" type mic... but, I think you should spend the extra bucks and get a Sennheiser MD421, which is another "must have" type mic.
