I record all my rhythm guitar with active EMGs and they are awesome.
They have a very controllable sound.

If your after thick sound then layer your track perhaps 3 or even 4 times

check the rhythm out on our tracks

 my initial thought is your guitars sound a lot like Metallica... then I see Metallica first in influences.

what amps/speakers are on those tracks.

Hi Sonixx

Yeah i hear you, its kind of an old school sound we have there on that album.
The forthcoming album which we're recording in March/April steps the material up and the sound a big way. We've got the influence stuff out of us now. Even though the roots are still there it took that album for us to find OUR sound. Big, raw biting guitar which i've been experimenting with forth coming on the new stuff.

For those recordings i my guitar was straight into my Randall RH200SC G2 which plays through the matching 4x12 randall cab (celestion speakers - cant remember which ones). No pedals or amp simulation in the chain. Just pure old school dirty amp mic'd up!

Lead guitarist uses Marshall JCM head and matching cab

thanks. I enjoyed your tunes. shoot me a PM when your new stuff is out.

I've heard a lot about ribbon mics, are they still good for recording a more aggressive guitar sound?

I'm going to shock Sonixx by agreeing with him. :D

I've had an el cheapo Nady RSM-4 lying around unused for about a year, and I finally got around to sticking it in front of my amp, a Mesa Rectoverb.

Holy shit. right off the bat, the lead tone I was getting was night and day better than the SM57, and while the rhythm sound was OK as is, mixing a SM57 in with the ribbon got me a tone I was very happy with.

You just need to watch out for sound pressure, as ribbons are a bit delicate... I've got a pop filter between the ribbon and the speaker, which hopefully will help somewhat, but all the same...
