Guitar Crackle on Direct In

Here's a problem - Reluctantly I have to record electric guitar direct in (neighbors). I use the line out my amp into a free input on my Aardvark 24/96.

My question is: Why am I getting a crackling noise (whilst playing) when I monitor the clean channel from the amp (more pronounced when the amp's onboard reverb is at all engaged (not that I'd use that) The signal is below red, and even below what I think is an acceptable volume, and this still happens.

Could this be an impedance mismatch issue? The line out of the amp is 1/4", specified at 0db (what's the deal w/ that). I thought that using the line out would eliminate impedance issues. Also, the Aardvark doesn't have a Hi-Z input.

This is all very depressing to me, as up until I moved into this apartment, I could crank the amp up whenever. At this point I can't even get decent electric sound at all.

Boo hoo. Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad cable or a dirty plug in, check these things before panicing. Of cource something might have gotten shaken loose when you moved, a cold solder joint will often work for a while then a little bump loosens it and causes a problem like the one you have described.

I hear no crackling on this mp3. Perhaps someone with better monitors will confirm this for me. There is one spot that sounds like it is clipping a little, but, definitely no "crackles." Have you looked at your recording in a wave editor to see if these sounds are really in the recording. It could also be something in your monitoring chain.

There is definitely a problem there - but maybe you wouldn't call it crackling. That's what it sounds like with headphones.

It can't be clipping because the signal is peaking at -5 or -6 db on record!

Whatever it is its annoying.

I don't hear any crackling either. The only added noise I hear is your playing. I hear your fingers slide and slap a bit because you amp is so bright. Get yourself a DI box for your situation.

I hear it on your licks that are played on the higher strings. It sounds like a slight sizziling, I don't now what is causing it though...sorry.
