I went to guitar center and ask an employee what he would recommend to a solo hip hop artist..
Since Im using an AKG C3000B mic with a dell 1505(?) laptop that uses a USB connection along with Adobe Audition 2.0..He told me the next items on my list would be...

Yahmaha HS 50M Monitors,
M-audio fast track pro mobile USB,
and a pre sonus tube pre..

What is your opinion on his list? My credit limit with the card was 700 dollars.

Dont talk to a sales rep at GC. Chances are you know just as much or more than they do.

What are you using for monitors?
Also what USB pre are you using?

Im not using any pre or monitors at the moment...Im in the process of putting my studio together and this is what he recommend to me for what Im going to be using it for.

I'd recommend you get a monitor/sub set up in the same price range as the yamaha monitors-- You'll enjoy mixing hip hop more with the sub and will be playing your tracks on systems with subs. You might wind up not getting the right level of bass in your mix for all systems, but a little distorted thump can do a rap track good.

And whatever interface and inexpensive preamp should be fine. Why not just get a usb interface that has an integrated mic pre? I don't know, but I don't think that a tubepre is going to really do much for your sound over a decent basic usb interface w/pres.

Get youself a pop filter and a good mic stand, too- I think they're essential for giving yourself and any 'featured guests' a good experience while recording-- a pro looking mic set up is all the bling a rapper should need to get that studio vibe going.

EDIT:

I looked up the interface they recommended- it's $200-- plus a $100 preamp, plus the speakers...

all the dude was doing was finding out a way to max out your limit... think about it. Avoid that Store Card if you can, my friend. You'll put $700 on it, and they'll turn around and raise your limit to two G's and you'll go and buy $1300 worth of whatever they tell you to....

You don't *need* much more than what you already have to make music, remember that. If I were you and making hip hop/ rap, I'd be more interested in getting something that will help me put together better beats-- like whatever the cheapest Akai MPC is (don't they make an MPD or something now for a few hundred?) or a Synth that you can build beats with. Since samplers and synths have pro-recorded and created sounds, you can trust that they'll sound pretty good without buying expensiev monitors. Just wire your computer into a good home stereo to playback stuff for your friends, and some headphones for yourself to do mixing.

Anyway, why not ask for that interface for xmas or something, and see how that does for your mic sound. The pres are already in there, and you will open up options for just $200.

Sales reps at guitar center don't know anything. They tell me false information every single time I go there. It's funny 'cause I just either look at them weird and walk away, or make them look like idiots in front of other customers by proving them wrong.

So what kind of setup list would you guys give me if I met up with yall in GC? I do have a $700 spending limit...

I do have a $700 spending limit...

Please don't think of it that way. I have many thousands of dollars to spend on my credit card "limit--" but if I ever spent that, I would put my family in the hole for literally decades. It is nothing but a trap, especially if you are young.

Thanks for tryna look out for me...but when I went there I was told him what I was planning on buying from them and it cost way more than what he showed me...so in a way he basically saved me money...some of the people on here said he is just trying to max out my card...but he actually made it so I didnt pay more than I had too...

I guess it really just depends on the person who is trying to help you ...you may have problems with some, and you may not with others...and I was very satisfied with the service and advice I got.

I bought the things on my list and Im getting ready to try them out...if I have any problems its a lesson learned...if not, Ill be back to let you guys know...
