Guide To Compression?

Hey is there a guide anywhere for basicly how compression works, and how to work it. I'm aware everythings about personal taste of course, but to start with people (like me) need to know what everything on a compresser will do to the sound and how to use it to your advantage.

I searched but couldn't really find anything, if you have any links to guides that would be great, thanks!
