i have asked this before but never got the answer
what is the best way to record guitars?
micing the amp or through the amp's line out??

the same with the bass

The best way is the way that sounds the best. It really depends on what you have to work with. Generally, bass is more likely to sound best direct. A shure SM57 is probably the most often used way of recording electric guitar amps. For acoustic guitar, the better the mic... the better.

I know these answers are vague, but your question is way too general... there are a million answers... every situation is different. Try everything you can think of (MOVE THE MIC AROUND A LOT)... and pick the one that sounds the best.

i have a marshall avt50 and a shure pg58. i dont think its made for micing amps

Move the mic around, an inch can make a big difference, adjust the tone on your amp so the sound on TAPE is what you want without eq.

Put the amp in different rooms.
Put it in a box.
Put it on a chair.
Point it into a dryer...

Mic the back of the amp.
Point it at the ceiling.
You get the idea...

A question like this is so broad, do you really expect someone on a BBS to take the time to write a new article for you?

Yup, this question is waaay too general...try doing some research before asking people to write a novel for you. Right now a response to your question boils down to two things: what type of gear do you have? What are you willing to spend to upgrade that gear? If the answers are "nothing" and "nothing," then you could get a 1/4" to 1/8" converter at radioshack for about $2, and get a decent sound by running your guitar directly into the LineIn jack on your PC. But it won't sound 1/1000th as good as a cheapo, well positioned $70 mic through a cheapo $70 preamp (for which you might still need that $2 converter).
