It's ridiculous. We're all waiting for someone else to get a Groove Tubes mic before ourselves, so no one really knows how good they are :D

I've done all my "Search button" research, I've found one clip of this mic, and thats about it. One online review. In the UK our prices suck, quite frankly, but Digital Village has an affiliation with Groove Tubes, meaning some of the mics sell for 50% of the price. The GT55 itself is £129 (stated as 57% off), which is pretty cheap from what I can tell. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this mic? Clips, reviews, monologues, soliloquies, whatever, just tell me about it :D

Thanks (and thanks in advance for telling me not to post this thread :D)

groove tubes are great
I have the new 1b and am having very usable results
Not as crispy in the high end but very smooth and easy to eq on varied sources thus far
worth a ton more than the $300 I paid
In his Name
BK
the 66 is also nice though not as well rounded, IMHO

GT-55

Well Canapos I went and picked-up aGt-55 today at Guitar Center. They where on sell for $299.00 without the shockmount, that was $99.99 extra. But I had seen them on ebay for $199.00so I told the Mgr and he sold it to me with shockmount for $ 254.00 out the door. She is a sexy >:>>?{?;[p shuht yo month, I was just taling about the mic baby, looking micorphone, you know all black and chrome, but I have not pluged her in yet maybe tonight after my wife goes to bed.he.he.he....anyhow I will plug her in to my JoeMeek VCIQ and dbx386 and give her a go soon! I will get back to you and let you know how it goes

My pair of 1B tubes are blowing me away so far.

I freakin LOVE the sound of this mic.

Cant speak for the GT55 but the build quality appears excellent and the sound is as Big K describes.
I believe the 55 is not a tube though so it may have a more "present" and crisper sound.

But if the sound is of the same caliber as the 1B then you will be able to get your moneys worth.

I still have not had the opportunity to put the mics up as drum overheads but on acoustic/classical they sound great and on my guitar amp the mic is simply phenomenol.

My singing voice is horrible so I've only used it twice on vox, and it does as good as a mic can for my not-so-full-bodied voice.
My usual vox subject friend, a breathy baritone-ish male voice, should be able to provide a second opinion on vox this weekend for me.

Wicked proximity effect.
Much more pronounced than my CAD e200.

no pads.
no roll offs.
Just sweet.

Not actually neccessarily relevant to the GT55 at all but I have had a wonderful Groove Tubes experience so far.

Yo Fuzz, you're right, it is not a tube mic,it is a Fixed class A FET,with Switchable 75HZ,12db octave, A Pad-10db odb, Freq Res 20Hz to 18Hz, Inherent Noise 1.16pV so the chart say's?? But it has a good fell and good and solid. Well my wife in now asleep and I am in my garge studio alone with mic and now to the vocal booth to send her through the motion and see if she is up to snuff, I will post back prom baly sometime early in the mourning???

Cool :) Yeah the Gt-55 is meant to be a relatively dark condenser, with the same electronics as its tube counterpart (66), but without the tube itself. Hopefully track one will be able to fill us in a bit more. Thanks

<with the same electronics as its tube counterpart (66), but without the tube itself.>

I honestly did not understand this one? Did you mean the same capsule?

It's probably just my ignorance. It's "officially" just the FET version of the Gt66, and I was just showing of my stupidity.

Well it took awhile for her to warm to operating speed, most likely because she was brand new? about 1/2 hr! but she is ok now which strange because buying the GC up at Metro Center is like going to the pawn shop at times, getting something brand new that has not been used by someone else and returned is like hitting a 3 point shoot from half court. Anyhow 1st I ran her into Nuendo's into a mix and she stood out very good in the mix setting at0db with the low cut switch off, going thru a Joe Meek VCIQ with no compression ,no Meekalizer just flat! not bad. Then thru the dbx 386 same settings ok! then thru a Aphex 107 had to raise the gain to 2:00 to get more out of her but still not bad. Then at-10db with the pad on ooh boy! very nice on all three pre's.
I am not a mic tech by no means I can't get real technical about levels and setting and shit but I do know good when I hear it and this mic is good. It is not as brigt as a C-1 and not dark like say a At4040 or Oktava MK319, it is just clean and clear, set's well in a mix and all by herself, when I ran her into SoundForge and lsten to her all by herself. I like the mic, I have a freind who play's guitar coming over saturday to chk her out and maybe then I will get some feedback on some different instuments. All and all I like this mic so far, I think it may work well on bass drums? because I have a bass voice and she made me sound good which is rare. For the price, I have to say thumb's up on this one,not a bad catch

Interesting. I'm a bass voice too. Could you post a clip if you have recorded?

I thought you would say that I don't use this computer for music, only for online, I have a super computer for tracking. Howevr I have a Iomega drive to transfere info when needed? I really don/t do MP3! but I will try to hook it up to give you a listen, but no promises.

Groove Tubes GT55

I have owned the GT55 for about a year and I love this mic. I use it for male vocals with my band and also as a mono room mic for drums. You can check out my tracks of my bands (Goodwin) debut CD for examples of it recorded: http://www.meetgoodwin.com/audio_new.htm this links to 2 tracks which the GT55 was used for all vocal tracks and for the drum room mic. You can also check out another track at the Fostex artist portal

These tracks were done with GT55 into Focusrite mic pre to ADAT AI3 digitally via ADAT into my FOSTEX VF160. I hope this helps. I think it is great mic for the money. I am looking into buying the 1B as well. I also have the ATM40 tube mic. This is a very good mic for many things in my opinion.

Best Regards,
Daniel

CanopuS - this is interesting cos I keep seeing DV pushing these mics and can't find anything on here about them. Remind me what mics you have again and then when you buy this (which you're clearly going to!) let me know some comparisons. I still don't have an SP B1 but I'm getting some monitors really soon so I'll soon be back in the market for more fun things !!!

Baritone voice

CanopuS,
My singer has a baritone voice and this mic seems to work really well with his voice. A good choice I think.

Thanks,
Daniel

"When is an AT4040 considered dark?"

Right, I thought the 4040 was a reasonably bright mic!!??

Perhaps not as bright as a 4033, but still not dark correct??

Daniel,

Give my compliments to whomever is the lead singer for the band "Goodwin." A really good voice. I really dig the big large baritone voice thing for that kind of rock. You may want to use a touch of hi frequence boost (just a touch) to make sure the lead pokes through the wall of guitars, expecially on the first track. Try possibly a minor cut of the guitars in the upper mids... just a guess. Also, kudos to the songwriting and arranging. You guys/gals are getting a very commercial sound in terms of arrangement, songwriting, and execution of the vocals. The other instruments are good also, but the vocals and songwriting are absolutely standout!:)

GT55 Recording

Thanks for the nice comments. I appreciate the tips on the mixing. Myself and the bass player engineered and mixed the entire CD. This was our very first time doing it all ourselves. We have lots to learn. Nice to hear the songs come through. Being the primary songwriter, that means the most to me.

Thanks,
Daniel
