New version ... reggae-esque ...

Thanks to Wayne Glaser for bass, Stu Gort for lead guitar, and Frank Basile on drums.

Any all comments warmly appreciated.

The weird thing about you K-dub, is that you are hardly my favorite style of music, but I love your voice, and your tunes punch with such a genuinely seductive quality of production that I can't help but love them. I am sure I will be humming this for days... loved the punch of the organ lead (the guitar lead could be more expansive and less compressed). Top notch. If you don't get a rep from me on this it's because I have to "spread it around"...

Thanks Tobe!

I just made some minor tweaks to what you first listened to. I brought the bass and lead guitar up half a db and the vocal up a full db.

All were just a hair too under the drums.

Hope you agree!

Best,

Kev-

Hey, I thought the title was wrong last time around, and that it wasn't quite so reggae-esque... what was that other song called?

Nice work, I like the Steely Dan lead guitar sound and playin. My only nit is the lead vox level, I like loud vox but I like a bit more blend with the instruments. Enjoyed the listen, thanks for sharing it.

As per usual, I should have only done a 1/2 db on the vocal. That's probably where the sweet spot it. Thanks Pete!

Good stuff here, man. In my opinion, the drums need to come down quite a bit. Guitars need to come up a hair, too. Those drums are quite loud. Electric guitar solo was nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

The drums struck me as a little dominant too --- which is why I brought the other elements up a tad. I'm going to give my ears a short rest on it and if when I go back to it, the drums still strike me as too much, I'll take them down while having a fresh perspective.

Thanks for the comment, P!

Generally real good. Couple of nits....

Not sure the key solo fits with the regge style. Sounded good, just didn't fit to my ear. I guess that goes for the guitar solo too. More of a pop/rock tone and style.

I thought the rhythm guitar on the right was too wet. I thought the reverb tail was too long.

The bass is well played. However it's kind of a "sparse" part. IOW it's not playing often. So since it's sparse, the mix kind of lacks a low end.

I also thought the vocal was a little too loud.

I think Wayne was going for a seamless groove feel, Trip -- so he kind of tucked his part in -- and I really liked what he did. I can give it more boost -- as I locked it just in with the kick, more felt than heard. I can shorten the tail on the git too ... I'll just gate it.

The break from "strict reggae" in the middle solo section is intentional, but I get what you were saying ... and I'm beginning to think my original instinct with the vocal (back a db) was probably right.

Thanks bud!

In my opinion, I'd like to hear a little more dry guitar over the existing reverb, which I think sounds nice.

Songwriting, arrangement and performance are top notch, as usual, Kev.
The voice level just needs to blend in more with the rest, it sounds real close to one's face. I thought the bass could use a little more of that reggea aggressiveness and make the tune groove a bit more. All in all, a great tune though!

Interesting, Cobalt -- thanks for the idea!

As mentioned earlier, Joe, I think my original instinct where I set the vocal back a db was the correct one. I tend to like to hear the "edges" around the vocal a little more, and so I have to watch my habit of bringing it too forward ... particularly in an arrangement where it should sound like the performance is sitting "in the band" setting.

It would be another story if the vocal were telling a story or needed to be the feature, but in this case, it's not.

Thanks to both for the thoughts!

New mix is on the link above, and I took a lot of suggestions from this thread:

- Vocal set further back
- Rhythm guitar gated and made louder (this made a huge difference)
- Drums pulled down
- Bass brought forward several db

Thanks all-

Kev

I'll give it a bump k-dub... listening again I think the organ and lead break combined are way too long. BTW for some reason I prefer the organ despite being a guitar hero in my own lunchtime. I think the organ sits better on the vibe of the song.

The bass bump helped.

I still the vocal is too loud. It's a bit dry too - but don't add too much of anything to it. Snare is pretty loud too.

The stereo keys are pretty wide. They take you for a roller coaster ride if you're on earbuds.

The rhythm guitar is a bit too wet - personal taste thing.

Didn't you used to have BGVs going "oooo" in parts of the chorus? I liked that.

Just thoughts. Every one of them optional of course.

Wow -- you remember the bgvs from a VERY early version of this, Trip. I'd pulled them out long ago. Thanks for the additional thoughts, bud.

I, too, favor the organ for the sound, Tobe. The guitar part is too killer to remove though ...

Thanks for visit back to listen!
