side note #2:

interested in opinions on other upgrades that might be worth the investment like tube mic power supplies and 7 pin cables.

are these tube power supplies good/better/worse? should they be replaced also?

I believe the 1200 is the same as the Alctron HST11a. Some of us in our GB changed the stock 7-pin cable for a Sommer Octave Tube SC w/Neutrik plugs.

As for the PSUs, most of them work OK but some users had issues with the pattern selector, so just in case i´ve changed mine with Grayhills.

FedEx-Claus dropped of boxes 1, 2, and 4 of my 5-box shipment yesterday. I received my ACM-70, ACM-900, ACM-1200 mics, one of my ACM-3s, my ACMP-73, and ACMP-84 pres. Still waiting for my remaining ACM-3s, ACM-4, ACM-310, and ACM6802T mics and ACMP-81 pres. Hopefully boxes 3 and 5 will show up today.

It's going to be a very busy weekend trying to finish Christmas shopping, baking, and testing out all of the gear. My friend may have some open time at his studio so I'm going to see if I can get over there to evaluate the new gear.

It will be mics and pres in paradise.

Mele Kalikimaka e ka Hauoli Makahiki Hou - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Honolulu, Hawaii !!!

Props to Chance for all his blood, sweat, and ink in putting this GB together.

Aloha, you all. We're in the middle of a cold spell, wind chill factor is 85 degrees F.

FedEx attempted delivery on Friday, but no one was home so they left a Door Tag. Since no one was going to be around on Saturday as well, I called FedEx to hold the last 2 boxes for me at their depot. They told me to call back on Saturday morning to make sure my shipment was held. I had to go to work at 6am on Saturday and called FedEx at 7am. The dispatcher was able to contact the Honolulu office, but said they did not open the counter yet. I had to wait a few minutes, but Honolulu clerk John finally came on the line and told me he had the shipment ready for me. He said they close at 11am, but I told him I would not be able to get there until about 11:30am. He told me no problem because he'll still be in the warehouse. After I finished work, I blazed down to FedEx, only to realize I went to the FedEx, and not FedEx Ground depot. I got directions to FedEx Ground, which was one block away from FedEx. The office was locked when I got there so I rang the buzzer. A few moments later, John came out and told me to back up to the warehouse doors. He brought out the boxes and I loaded them into the van and now I've got all 15 mics and 10 preamps to experiment with.

One of my engineer friends is just starting a project so I'm letting him use my Bricasti M7 reverb and whatever mics and pres he wants. This will be a nice way to shakedown the gear. I'm going to ask him to check out the ACM-1200s first and see if I can get some clips from him to post, if we can get the client's approval.

I also got a tracking update requested by Chance showing that all 5 packages totalling 254.70 pounds were delivered.
FYI, shipping charges for my stuff to Honolulu, Hawaii totalled $685.04.

Thanks again to Chance for arranging the GB. I'm looking forward to the one once my bank account recovers over the holidays. I've got some gear rentals going out for New Year's Eve and early January for the likes of The Bangles, Foreigner, Ne-Yo, Gloria Estefan, and Dionne Warwick, so that will be a good start towards replenishing the GB-GAS Foundation funding.

Happy holidays to all, I know mine will be.

So we now know what the price of living in Paradise is. Wow! (admittedly, that was one BIG order!)

Milk is over $8.00/gallon, the median home price is $700K, a 1-bedroom condo goes for $400K, gasoline was way up there, but now it's at a "managable" $2.25/gallon.

Wouldn't trade it for anything else!!!

So much for being off-thread. We now resume regularly scheduled GB posting. :D :D :D

Yikes! You could have had two people fly to California a couple of months from now and bring the shipment back as their luggage for less than that! :D :D :D

I had almost forgotten about the ACM-3. So the replacements for the sagging ribbons are on this order? Can't remember if I ordered a shock mount for it or not.

Does Chance plan to send automatically to recipients of the ACM-3 from GB1, or do I have to contact him for a replacement once he gets everything shipped?

i have no clue...i just know chance stated that he'll tackle the issue of getting out the replacement ribbons from the last buy after everything from this one is shipped

assuming for the time being

that the preamps have

viable warranties

how are opening the units,

rotating/shielding the power transformer,

replacing transistors,

and the like

going to affect the warranty?

good point!

I did more recording today and here's some more thoughts,

310 is still killing it, LOVE em! On drum OH's Too

stock 1200 worked great on mid-rangy male vocal.

acm900 about 2-3ft in front of kick is replacing my homemade sub-kick.

They do, printed in the manual.

"TNC Audio guarantees the microphone preamplifier to the original purchaser for a period of one year (subject to the date of the original invoice). Customer is responsible for any transportation required, but for one year, TNC wil be responsible for mending or replacing any unit found to be defective (but not for units found to be abused or improperly utilised)."

I tried out all my mics tonight and was surprised it took more gain for all the tube mics than it did for any of the ribbons. The 1200 was horrible on the first pass with the hi-pass switched on. It had this horrible nasal sound to it and I couldn't evan use the 10db cut, I couldn't get enough gain without a lot of floor noise. I had my firepod cranked up to 4 o'clock before I switched the db switch back to 0 and then I ran my firepod at 12 o'clock. Anybody else notice this. I'm gonna try my other 1200 tomorrow.

It took me like twenty minutes to figure out how to use the shock mount for the 900. Once I figured it out I felt like a moron.

I haven't evan powered up my pre's yet, not sure how to run them in to my firepod. I'm guessing I just turn down the channel I plug the pre into.

Is the 10dB cut a pad or a low-cut? If it's a pad, you would only want to use it on very loud sources, because you will decrease signal-to-noise by 10dB otherwise.

From what I've read, the 1200 REALLY need to be burned in for a good 12 hours or so. After that, the nasal thinness(that has been reported before) dissappears and the mic sounds beautiful.

Give that a shot.

Maybe I've got a bad tube. All of the tube mics were burned in for 24 hours before I tried any of them. The 10db is a pad I think since there is a low cut/hi pass switch on it as well. With the db switch at 0db and low cut/hi pass set to flat(-) it did sound much better, but not as good as I expected.

The switches themselves are really sloppy. The low cut is hard to move but there is a detent there while the db switch moves from 0 to -10 with little movement but -10 to 0 there is a detent. This is hard to explain but there is less travel from-10 to 0 than there is from 0 to -10. It's like the switch is moving on the inside.

Apologies for the silly question, but does burning in just involve leaving the mic plugged in /turned on?

1200 Top Grill indented?

1200 owners...

Does the top of your 1200 have a slight indentation?

I'm not too worried about it but what makes me question it is that it's not exactly centered... which makes me think it was Bent or pushed in a tad... Hopefully it happened before it was assembled.

B.

mine has the dent on top too. its not as perfect round as yours and not as deep but now that you mention it it looks like crap. i guess im gonna have to smooth it out with a dowel or drum stick pushing from the inside. i also had to take mine apart to fix the switches. they didnt move at all. i had to re-center things and screw it back together all even and then it was fine. i did get one DOA - 73 mic pre. it did power up but most of the led lights are not working and it wont pass sound. it even had a piece of tape on it with chinese writing. i guess it failed inspection but they decided to shipped it any way.

My 1200 has a slight dimple in it--hardly noticeable, really.

On another note--my switches were fine, but then I took it apart to look inside, and when I re-assembled it, one of the switches got hung up a little. So with very little re-positioning, I was able to make both switches work fine. If anyone has a problem with their switches, I'd recommend taking it apart and re-assembling it.
