Agreed. I for one, hope these things are direct clones. And a good point about the numbers. If we wern't trying to get in the ballpark of these legendary pres, why would we have the same numbers?

Umm, to sell them to people hoping to pick up $1500 worth of preamp for $200?

(Don't get me wrong -- I have 4 of the pre's on order, and I hope they sound great. But I try not to put a lot of faith into naming schemes.)

Terry said he was checking into this for you over on the PSW forum I thought.

Judging by schematics I have seen from the factory, I reckon at least the '74 will be very close design-wise to the original.

I'd like to see the innards of an '81 to try and figure out if the same applies here.

We´ve seen the innards of 797 made 81. Discrete with inductors for eq,
some ic´s for the various leds.
But please someone show one these opened!

Right, but not for the '81; as I understood it so far this could be even nicer if it uses the same taste of amplification as the '73 & '84 (class-A output with gapped OTX).
The 797-pic gave that impression, hence our eagerness for the please-show-the-guts (like Roddy posted today for instance).

Have a good weekend,

Peter

OK,you guys broke me down. Since I guess I'm the only one with pre's, I pulled them from the rack and tried to get something resembling useful shots of the insides. This is the 81, since that seems to be the one people are most interested in..... Here you go - please feel free to spread the love to the other sites. I have not been able to get on either PSW or Prodigy.....

I hope those work for you. It's now going back in the rack.

Someone else is going to have to step up and do some clips. I've got to get back to work.

bp;

thanks! looks great pretty much like what we were hoping for based on the pic we saw. Nice, no surface mount parts! and the IC's are even in sockets it would appear! amazing!

Well, the ICs are driving the LEDs, so I'm not sure you'll gain a lot by swapping ;)

. . . and other than ease of modding, what is wrong with SMT? SMT parts usually have a tighter tolerance, etc.

Chance - please let us know once all the invoices have gone out - just so we're all tuned in and don't hold anything up on your end.

Wait.....am I the only one checking every hour? (My fiance keeps wondering why I get up in the middle of the night ;)

Thanks ! Much appreciated.

Some tech-talk already resulted, might be good to do an attempt to keep that more
or less concentrated, see:

Thanks,
