I just want to say, I can't wait (but I guess I have to) to get hold of a few of these mics. What a great opportunity this is. My "bonus" from work is coming at a perfect time. And it's more than I expected (means an extra mic or two). I too am a gear junky. So while I would like to hear what they sound like, not knowing won't stop me. I'll find a use for each. It may just sit out and look cool, but that will be it's use :D . Thanks for doing this Chance.

When he gets to step twelve we should throw him a party or something :D

I don't think I'm getting to step twelve anytime soon. While admitting you have a problem may be one of the twelve steps, I'm pretty sure wanting to change is as well--and I'm not looking to change... :D

Your mistake was describing it as a problem in the first place. It's not a problem; it's a ....hmmm.... a lovely obsession.

Dgatwood...

It's hard to guess, but just judging from anecdotal evidence, the risk on condensers is very low—probably a fraction of a percent with any real problems—while the risk on ribbons is very high... like 80%. Fortunately, they are shipping them with spare ribbons this time. :D

The sum total of problems I had with my condensers (I bought four last round---two LDCs tube condensers, two 310s) was pulling it out of the box and finding a screw on my living room floor abd hearing something sliding around inside the power supply. One of the screws that was supposed to hold one of the XLR connectors in place had lost its nut (and maybe washer, I forget). Somebody hadn't tightened a screw enough. No big. I would expect the condensers to have almost no failures of consequence, though I'd expect probably one out of fifty or thereabouts to have some relatively minor problem like that one.

The ribbons... I bought six---two each of the lollipop, the Royer look-alike, and the double ribbon. Of the six, all four of the single ribbons arrived with a sagging ribbon, at least a couple of those were badly stretched with the first several folds on each end completely straightened. That suggests that something physically stretched the ribbon violently during the manufacturing process. I think you could mic up John Bonham's bass drum with the ribbon mic in the blowhole and you'd get less ribbon damage.

The big difference with the double ribbons is that the plastic cage protects the ribbon from air blasts, though I can't imagine how many PSI it would take to do that much damage through the cage f the ACM-3....

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you order a single ribbon, expect to disassemble it and install the replacement ribbon as soon as you get the thing. Anything less is probably not going to yield good results unless they fix whatever severe process problem caused the radically stretched ribbons.

Thanks for this summary...it will help us with expectations.

One question for Chance, though - given the information on ribbons and their incorrect tensioning the last buy, has something been done to improve the process this time around?

It's not going to stop me buying a couple of ACM-3's regardless, but it would be nice to know that they're working on their QC using lessons from the last time around.

Jay

P.S. quantities of the ACMP73 are looking really good!!!

I'm curious why so many people are hyped up on the 73 rather than the other two pres. To me, if I were putting them in the order I'd buy them, the 73 would be 3rd. What am I missing here?

If I'm not mistaken--the thought process is going kinda like this on the 73:

+ Meter
+ DI
- Less robust EQ than the rest.

Two pluses and one minus BUT the minus isn't that big a deal for most folks since we'll likely track clean and worry about EQ later. (I've got like 4 channel strips w/eq & 2 standalone parametric eq units--and I still tweak in the box after tracking more often than not.)

Anyway, that's how I see it...

Instrument input. That's why I'm buying one. Of course, I'm planning to buy two of the 81, so I suppose technically the 73 is also my third choice, but the 84 would be my fourth. :D

Meter + DI + plenty flexible enough EQ = no brainer

I wrestled with which to get as well, the ACMP-81 or the ACMP-73, and this was the exact conclusion I came up with as well... I too, believe, that the EQ on the ACMP-73 would be totally flexible enough... and I like the idea of the meter and the DI... I typically record acoustic music so a DI probably wouldn't get used much by me, but I'd like to have it 'just-in-case'...

Yes, and I'm sure we can expect the quantities to rise as the group buy nears the cut-off date... Not sure an exact date has been set as of yet though...

Currently, there have been 187 people register for this group buy, but only 152 of them have choosen any products... At this point, if no one else registered, and if/when these 35 choose their products, that alone will make the counts rise considerably...

I wouldn't be suprised if the ACMP-81 went over the 100 mark before this GB is over... maybe even the ACMP-84... We'll see. :)

Is there a minimum number needed for mic models to remain part of the GB? For example, currently the ACM-1 only has 6 ordered. If that number stay low like that, will that mic still be produced for the GB?

JTC111--where can I view the numbers of the order thus far? Must have missed that in the thread, and it's not jumping out at me on the User Console...thanks!

Nevermind--found it. It's here for anyone else who might have missed it... http://www.n344rb.com/MUSICIANSWORKSHOP/QuantityByProduct.asp

Though one thing about the ACM-1 (which I got in the last buy and like)--my console lists no price for it. Just me? That alone might keep numbers down for it...

I hadn't looked at that. I only picked that as an example because it had the lowest number, but my question applies to any of the mics that are currently being shown low interest by the group.

This is something I don't know how the manufacturer will react to. They might reject having to set up assembly to make only 6 of one type of mic. I still can't reach anyone because of the Frankfort show. I do know however that the mic pres are a seperate order from their electronics division, whereas the mics are from their mic division.
I really want to get going on this but my hands are tied until they return.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm fine with it either way, if they drop some mics from the list then I'll probably wind up ordering a few more of the others. So we'll know when we know.

And add my thanks to all the others for organizing this for everyone.

I was just on the PSW site (PSW>whatever works>HERE WE GO AGAIN) and found the latest post interesting/encouraging. That studio is that famous one in "the Bahamas"

Hey Chance,

I'll post this publicly, in case there is information that all should see.

An engineer is in here in our studio from NYC working on a big project, and I told him about the Group Buy. He was excited, and has now signed up and ordered two of the 1200's.

He says he got a receipt, but never "had to pay" in any way.

He has Paypal ready, and wants to pay and thereby complete the order, but isn't sure if he should already have paid, or not.

What's the exact deal with that?

Yes, this is encouraging news!

I just posted a reply in that forum as well... I'll post the last part of what I posted there, here:

Also, there has been an addition added to the User Console that some of you might have seen if you logged in lately... There is a new button there, that is for the time being disabled, that is labeled: "View Invoice". As soon as Chance wants to start sending out invoices, this button will become ENABLED and you can view your invoice inside the User Console and pay there as well... through PayPal of course...

I bought a acm310, and an acm3 off of 37point5. I tried them out yesterday and they sound reeeaaly good.
Glad you enjoyed the mics, Rust E-Z!

If anyone is interested, I still have a couple ACM-1s, ACM-2s and the double-ribbon ACM-4s (with shockmount). Prices aren't much more than what I paid for them. Just PM me for details.

hey chance, do you plan on offering the ACMP-xx's in future group buys, or is this going to be a 1 time offering?

i really want to get in on a couple of these babies, but i'm extremely low on funds at the moment

Man, I feel your pain... I've not had a paycheck since December 7, 2007...

I've worked odd-jobs and have raised enough to get 2 of the preamps... I'd like to have one of the ACM-1200's, but that'll have to wait... I hope those are offered in the future as well...
