Chance - if they do go back on the market I would like to purchase one each of the following (+shockmount if available).

ACM-6802

ACM-3

ACM-583

Thanks,

David

I think China is having their annual 2 week holiday as I still haven't gotten a response about ribbon motor replacments.

That's a pretty big commitment, so I wouldn't expect a quick answer. For one thing, that's a pretty big number of ribbon motors to replace - it would cut substantially into the profit margin on this deal (from their standpoint). And in addition, they have to figure out why the problem happened in the first place, and make sure that the replacement motors are reliable. So it's not a trivial task for them. It doesn't do any good for them to replace the motors with new ones that suffer the same problem.

Arrived home from my government contract job in DC today and found an unusual item under my xmas tree. It turns out to be my ACM 4 :)

I am quite tired from my 6 hour drive home but initial impressions are such. The mic was very well packed, much better in fact, than items I order from online equipment distributors like AMS or MF.

The ACM4 itself is in a handsome little wood box which is also heavily padded with foam. The mic feels heavy and solidly constructed and has a nice professional look despite the ghetto-gold trim

Then there is the shock mount which seems of decent quality.

To think that I paid only $60 for this seems almost absurd. Hopefully this opinion will still be the same after I have actually plugged it in and tried it out on my lovely wife's vocals.

I'll post an update after that event at some point this weekend.

Just wanted to chime in and say that my 2 ACM-2's arrived safe and sound this morning. A nice early Christmas present! They look good and feel fairly solid, but I did not get a chance to really do anything with them. However, I did take a few minutes to take the grill off and check the ribbons. One looks just about dang near perfect and the other has a noticeable sag and you can see the ribbon move when tilting the microphone. No big deal because I planned on having Mr. Joly mod one of these at some point. Guess which one I will be sending? As for the other, I have started a small single song project for a friend of mine doing a cover of a worship song she likes. I need to track guitars soon, so I will throw the ACM-2 up and see how I like it.

As an aside, I had to laugh to myself seeing the invoice and that we had all paid for these back in May. Just about 7 months for this to all be done. I say this not to complain, but just the stark realization of how much effort and time Chance had to put into this for a lot of people he does not know.

Chance, sincere and heartfelt thanks for all you have done for us. Thank you, thank you, thank you

Merry Christmas!

Ok I have setup the mic and coerced my spouse to stand in front of it and use her pipes for a little while. To my surprise, the output signal wasn't too weak for my Toa RX-7 console and the inputs had plenty of gain for the job. Looking at the specs for the console I calculate the maximum available gain to be 65dB.

With my wife 10 inches from the mic I got a very nice full sound and couldn't hear any ambient noise from my room. With two computers and my Akai sampler running I was very pleased not to hear cooling fan whine. Overall ambient noise was as low as using a dynamic mic. With my monitors turned on I found that positioning my ACM 4 at 90 degrees to the speakers was a no no.

The sound I heard was smooth and also dark but with very nice detail.
It was true to her voice and worked nicely with it. It didn't have any of the metallic flavor I get from her usual mic either.

Overall I am pretty impressed with my cheap Chinese microphone. It's not the best mic I've heard on my wife's voice but it's really very usable and I do see us recording with it soon. For the money it's a great value.

Thanks Chance for being so generous and providing such a sweet deal! If I was to put a retail price on this purchase I think I would have to spend at least $350 to get another mic that sounds as good as this little ribbon unit.

got my mics yesterday, woohoo! they look great, can't wait to test em out tomorrow.

FedEx changed the delivery date from yesterday to the 24th. A nice Christmas to myself.

yes - mine rolled over the 24th, too. Somehow, I don't think my wife will appreciate a mic for Christmas.

My mics showed up on Honolulu, HI, this past Saturday. I guess FedEx delivers on Saturdays during the holidays.

Thanks for all your effort, Chance. Looking forward to the next group buy.

Mele Kalikimaka e ka Hauoli Makahiki Hou!
(Merry Christmas and Happy New Year)

Aloha!!!

curses! our receptionist went home at lunchtime, and fedex showed up after that and logged a "local delivery exception".

I knew I should have made her work on Christmas Eve! :D

I guess they'll try again on Wednesday. If it looks like things are getting wrapped around the axle after that, I'll PM you Chance, but hopefully it'll get here.

Well, merry xmas to all you xmas observing group buy'ers.

This mic buy has been a whole bunch of fun for me this year (yes, even the ACM-3) - I actually enjoyed the waiting around part of it, too. I think I just dig cool, cheap microphones, even sight unseen.

Enjoy the day - away from work, and (hopefully) with family. Peace to everyone. And three cheers for Chance, who made it all possible.

got'em!! They look great -- just the visual is worth the wait. As most of you know by now, the ACM-310 and ACM-6802T come in cool cases.

I'm in my office, away from the ability to do any meaningful testing, but I did just borrow a little phillips screwdriver from IT and open up the ACM-2 and ACM-3 (don't see how to open the ACM-4, and it's probably not something I want to try here, anyway). I stopped short of a complete disassembly, but got to the point where I could visually see severe sagging with the ACM-2, but perhaps surprisingly, not with the ACM-3. I'll be able to do better tests later, but it does look like I get the opportunity to test my ribbon tensioning skills on the ACM-2.

edit: - never mind what I said about the ACM-3, it's sagging, too. Twice the tensioning fun!

edit2: - initial tests with the 6802T, 310, and ACM-4 are awesome -- great sounding mics, all of them. I put an old GE 12AT7 in the 6802T, which gives it a less crisp, but more full sound. If you're in the Houston area, go to O&E Electronics at Shepherd and N610 loop - they've got a bunch of them for a few bucks each.

Koj,

Go to Hyde's site and search the "Legacy" range........there's a few more "familiar" mics, Epiphone amp knock-offs, familiar looking guitars, etc.

:D
there's even some rebranded studio desks (rta i think?)
i didn't realize at first that it was an australian retailer.
well it's one thing to buy from a distributor or manufacturer, but iirc the 310 was actually chance's design
