Chance,

Is it possible that you would have "left overs" after all orders have been despatched......specifically, ACM-1, ACM-2 or ACM-4 ribbons? If so, put me near the top of the "extras" list and we'll take it from there :)

The only other alternative is to find out who the Australian buyers are and hope one of them has mics they want to dispose of, and I doubt there's much chance of that.

Yes I got a few extras. I did this because if anyone had any problems, I could quickly replace it. If everything is OK with everyones order then I might. Other than that, Every mic was pre paid and accounted for. I'll post in a couple of weeks when every order is shipped.

Very possible. I had 3 hudge orders shipped to Austrailia. The shipping to Austrailia is VERY expensive which makes me wonder if this is a viable or cost effective way to get mics. I would think you could just go to your local music store and get some mics. When I meet with the manufacturers in January, one of the questions I will ask them is can they "drop ship" to other countries? I imagine I would have to set up a distributor in the different countries. In that way, the distributor would get the product direct from the manufacturer and could ship locally. Any thoughts ??

that definitely makes sense...there's no reason to pay to have something shipped all the way to the US, only to turn around and ship it back to china!

maybe on the next go-around you could find a couple of people in aus, europe, and wherever else to send the mics to and ship the "local" orders

This is an excellent idea. I tried this last year with my group-transistor array order for people in Europe. I sent a large number of orders in one box to a guy in France and he forwarded the individual packages, saving alot of effort and money.

Chance,

Over the last few years we have imported quite a bit of studio gear plus a fair number of guitars from the US and Canada and while shipping can be costly when compared to domestic shipping costs, once you compare total importing costs to our local Aust. prices, more often than not, importing is more than competitive.

If you like, I can check with our Customs Dept., and seek their advice on importing direct as there may be factors that make it more cost effective to keep things the way they are.

Obviously, I'd like to know about any surplus ribbon mics you may end up with OR who the Aust., buyers are.

Cheers,

ChrisO

Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to check with your customs. As it is now, you guys are paying freight to the US along with duty and all the other fees, Then you have to pay shipping back to Austrailia. I just spoke to the manufacturer and they see no problem shipping to Austrailia, but they will only accept my US dollars for the mics and shipping (from China) If there is a market out there, this would save a lot of time and effort and you all would get the gear MUCH quicker too.

OK mate, give me a day or two and I'll email you direct with what I find out.

Has anyone taken apart their ACM-3 (the Royer look-a-like)?

I'm wondering if the motor uses a ribbon offset toward the front of the mic (like Royer) or towards the back of the mic (like the Nady RSM-3).

Lots of pics in this thread: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=254617

Though, no direct answer to your question because:
1) It's hard to tell, but the motor is certainly different front to back.
2) I forgot to see what side was front when I took it apart. lol :o

Nice job! Here's what I posted to the other thread:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re: Ribbon offset - I was confused by your 5th picture down. But your 7th picture down from the top appears to show the ribbon itself offset toward the back of the magnets. It is the placement of the ribbon in the magnetic gap (centered or offset) that provides either a symmetrical or asymetrical HF response and SPL handling like the Royer R121. The ACM-3 appears to have a "Royer-like" offset ribbon placement like the Nady RSM-3 and RSM-5.

Ribbon sag - yeah, at this point I've seen more stock Chinese ribbon mics with floppy ribbons than properly tensioned ribbons. And I'll bet a fair number of posts to the forums regarding "low output, bass heavy" Chinese ribbon mics were based on hearing mics with sagging ribbons.

Btw - the transformers in the Fathead / RSM-3, RSM-4, RSM-5 are held in place in the bodies with some cotton batting to prevent the rattling you noticed in the ACM-3.

Definately a market over here in Sydney Australia, where are you from ausrock?

Ahh, good idea. I was going to use some foam. But I didn't want it to depolymerize in the future and contaminate everything with nasty sticky pieces of foam. Cotton batting should work great.
Not to mention it will help deaden resonance.

Where are we on paypal requests? I have not heard anything at all and I check my e-mail daily?

Fedex is picking up 27 large orders today. Once those are out, I will bring in another load from the wherehouse and process. I am doing this out of my studio and have limited room. as some of you who have been here know. I only have 14 boxes of mics left at the wherehouse. (originally 69) Maybe that will give you some idea of how far along we are. one box can contain as little as 4 mics (ACM-310 & 6802-T) or 12 mics like the ACM-2, 3, and 4. and there are 8 ACM-1 per box. Next go round packaging will be sub'd out. I haven't used any mic except for the 510 (USB) and I am dying to get some into the "OR" LOL

Missing shockmonts

Chance,

I was actually the very first person to receive his mics. It was great to be the first (hurray!), but alas I was also one of the few early birds who didn't get any shockmounts, so those odd-shaped ACM-4's I bought are sitting largely unused since I have nothing to hold them with.

No worries though. I PM'ed you four weeks ago about this, I'm guessing you're just waiting to finish the initial mailings before addressing this shockmount thing. This is really no big deal, I just want to make sure I don't fall off your radar - you've got enough to worry about as it is.

My original PM is below. And yes, I'm repeating my interest in getting another ACM-3 w/shockmount if any are left over - I had intended to order a pair, and somehow left the 2nd mic off my original order. Regardless of whether there's another ACM-3 for me, I'm expecting to pay for the shipping when you send out the missing shockmounts. Please PayPal me and I'll take care of it.

Thanks again for all your efforts. I'm constantly amazed by your persistence and generosity in this project. It's an extremely cool thing you've done here.

Best,
Aj

Chance,

When you ship me those missing shockmounts, is there any chance of me ordering another ACM-3? You had mentioned there might be spares, and I had intended to order a pair of these - somehow I goofed and ordered just one.

I'm guessing this may be jumping the gun (too early) for this request, but I figured I'd ask since you're shipping me out another box. My apologies if this question is a burden in any way.

Best regards,
Aj

Are you Andy? if so, your shock mounts are going out in todays pick up

As far as "extra mics" if I have extras (and I should), I would like to give some to MJ for all the help he has contributed to all of us, and the info (over the years) about mic design that brought the ACM-310 to fruition. My mic knowledge is limited. All I did was to collect as much info as I could and submit it to the engineers. China is now working on different capsules (for the 310) including a lollypop.
Some of you might remember the last GB, all the extras were given to 2 studios that lost everything in Katrina. We all collectivly paid for those mics, and you will no doubt remember how good it felt to to do that.

Chance,

I'm Adam in Dexter, MI.

OK, PM me with your name, rank, and horsepower (name and address as on your invoice), and I'll see if I can sneak them in todays pickup. (are the PM's working again?)
