I ordered a ribbon here. I'll let y'all know whats up when I test it out.

For those of us who haven't seen this up close and personal, how is the ribbon supposed to look? Straight, with no sag at all, or is a little sag OK?

Also, without opening it up, is a sagging ribbon obvious when you use the mic? If so, how will it sound if it has a badly sagged ribbon?

The tiniest bit of ribbon sag while the mic is horizontal is OK. The pictures I sent to Des McKinney for his HomeTracked blog show ribbons with excessive sag (click to enlarge).

Without opening the mic, ribbon sag can be identified by ear. Using headphones, slowly rock the microphone through a 180 degree arc - bringing one face, then the other, parallel to to the floor. Mics with ribbons as slack as those shown in the pictures at the link above will produce a noticable "clang" or "clunk" as the ribbon rapidly shifts position when pulled by gravity as the mic is rocked.

If such a mic is used, it will have extremely low output (less ribbon material in the gap to generate signal), will probably have distortion at high levels (due to some of the ribbon passing through a non-linear portion of the magnetic field) and may produce occaisional "clunks" or "clangs" as the ribbon gets buffeted by chuffs of air if used for guitar cabs or vocals.

i ordered a ribbon too, at least one i think, i don't remember exactly since it's been like 6 freakin years since i placed my order! :D

That's great Michael, thanks for the reply. Great explanation.
I'll try to post if mine are a little loose (I ordered a few).

I also assume that if you shake a mic like this, it may get noisy even if it's fine--so gentleness is in order. No?

UPDATE
Everything is paid, got all the docs, truck is reserved, and first thing Monday morning, I will be going down to the port of Long Beach, pay the $56.00 for the forklift and load and bring back to Ontario.

I think it's safe to say we'll all be riding with you. Hope there are no surprises!

Godspeed!

Awesome Chance!

If you have a digital camera, you should take pics of all those mics! I bet it'll be a sight to behold. :)

As requested heres a pic of the truck in front of my home. After lunch I will take them to my wherehouse and tomorrow or Wednesday I will take inventory. I am hoping to start shipping next week. I have a lot of work this week. Well the pic exceeds the file size limit so I can't post. If someone can send me an E-mail, I will reply with an attachment that can be resized

Chance,

I sent you an email. I can resize your pic for ya.

Again, it has "MICROPHONES" in the subject line.

Raw

Someone else here said they will do it and I sent to them, but I guess they couldn't do it.
