oh i will...i'm very curious to see how much of a difference there is between the stock mics

having heard some clips of cheap-o modded ribbons vs. expensive ribbons, i'm guessing that it wouldn't take much to get these mics in the same neighborhood as a royer. even if it takes $100 in parts, you're still talking less than $200 for the modded mic vs. the $1200 that a new 121 commands.

Dunno... I am torn between Lundahl and Cinemag. Likely Lundahl... though it may open up too much high end defeating the purpose of the mic and its character. In the end it will probably be a price/availability decision for me.

sweet deal...i can't wait for my royer knock-off to get here - i currently have access to a couple of 121's, so i'm going to do a shootout between the 2, then perform whatever mods are necessary to get the ACM-3 in the same league with the big boys.

Please post your results and final mods. :D

in all honesty, it'll probably be a couple months before i can get the thing modded - i recently quit my job, and have a lot of other crap on my plate, so it'll take me a little bit to get the $$$ for the parts

BUT...i should be able to compare the group buy mic to the royer within a few days of it arriving, so that anyone interested can at least hear the differences and maybe come up with some ideas of their own for mods and such

Although Chance may have ordered some extra mics for inventory, I think everyone who ordered has already paid for the mics and now just owes for shipping to their own locale. It is possible that someone might want to sell some of the mics that they've ordered though.

I have two Lundahl transformers just a-waitin' for these mics. If-in I still don't like them I may have them re-ribboned by an RCA-spec tech.

I just got notice that our mics are in. I just sent the power of attorney and a check for $1600.00 for duty, broker, and dock fees, They said to fax a copy of the check and they will release the goods. I am awaiting an E-mail with the "release papers"

Yes!

Fantastic. Chance, the more you explain about this process, the more I am impressed with what you are doing. It is no small undertaking. Thank you for your work.

I am interested in knowing what kind of testing was done on the mics at the factory. Were the individual mics tested to be sure they are in working order? I anticipate that ther will likely be some quality control issues, but would still like to know if any efforts were made to protect against that.

Thanks again.

re: Quality Control issues

I'm trying to get to the bottom of the "ribbon sag" issue in Chinese ribbon mics. (6 out of 6 this week alone). That is, whether the ribbon sag I've noticed in these mics is due to improper tensioning in the factory or to a tendency of the ribbons to go slack during shipping.

You can see pics (and repair advice) of what I'm talking about at the "Hometracked" blog of Des McKinney.

It would be cool if you could keep a tally of how many ribbon mics come in with sagging ribbons and then express this as a percentage of the total order.

I have an idea how to determine if the sag is caused by improper factory tensioning or shipping-induced slackening. But it requires a close inspection and comparison of both properly tensioned and slack tensioned ribbons. Chance, let me know if this is an issue with this shipment and if you're interested in troubleshooting it.

Thanks Mike, I'll do that. On the last GB two out of 70 ribbons had this problem.
I'm sure everyone here will report, but there were only a few ribbons ordered.

2 / 70 - that's good news Chance. Maybe the mics I've been seeing have been the blow-out defects.

I'd bet that it was more than that last time. I know that one of mine had a sagging ribbon, and I haven't yet checked the other one.

I ordered a couple more ribbon mics this time, so we'll see what turns up.

I'll be sure to report the status of my ribbons.

How does the grill of the lollipop style ribbons come off?
