OK gang, let the fun begin
For those that don't know the drill, heres how it works. you send me an E-mail. In the subject header put "MICROPHONES" in all caps. Then in the message area, state what you want. I will use those E-dresses for the Pay pal money requests (ONLY ONE E-DRESS PLEASE). cut off date is May 6. Its important to put "MICROPHONES" in the subject header so it will be easier to file to a seperate folder plus I can, at a glance, weed out all the Viagra, work at home, and all the other trash you are all familiar with. Pay pal has a small fee, but I will cover it for now and add when I pack and ship to you. I'm getting TONS of E-mail questions and can't possibily answer them all, so post here, theres a good chance some one will have the answer

This is the post I was referring to "ONE E-dress"

I just want to say I am sorry for the links I posted. I in no way would have wanted to hurt this Group buy. The links I posted were Not to a Manufactures web site. It was a link to a Small Web based business that sells 3 No name ribbon mics, 2 tube mics... and a handful of cables and connectors. Very much like what a few people on this bbs are doing. The Ribbon mics look Identical to the ribbons being sold in this GB. I was going to Post to you all, that if you were interested in seeing them, to PM me. I thought it was Very appropriate Info so I made the Mistake of posting the links. I am sorry, especially to Chance.

No one needs to remark on this. You already stripped my 5 years of rep points from my 1 post. While others have mentioned Larger Co. "Brand Names"... I do understand that my links to a No name Cheap mic was inappropriate.

Take Care,
B.

This is no problem to me. Feel free to post that link again. I would like to see it too. It might be useful info. Just don't downgrade them

Get ready for 10 pages of "did they come yet??" posts.;)
yeah well, about a week or two in you're going to be getting that every day at work jim  :D

Thanks Chance. I was feeling pretty low about it... just thinking I could have possibly hurt this GB by doing something I didn't think was that big of deal. But I don't know what happened on the last one that got shut down. I also like to be more Low Key here and to all of a sudden be the target of a witch hunt was a little nerve racking.

So as Chance requested here's a few links... & FYI, when I came across these mics I searched and searched for More Info. on them... and Found None. There was no Parent Co. building these mics that carried the same Logo name, so I felt it was OK to post the links for Comparison. My conclusion was this seller (I'm not mentioning a name) bought a truck load of mics from a Chinese Manufacturer put a name on it and started a little web page and also sells on Ebay.

Not only do the Ribbons look Identical (-color changes) but the Small Tube Mic (6J1B tube designed) sounds very much like the ACM-310... the housing is a bit different.

These are the 2 links I posted.

here's a 3rd I just found this morning
Actually, just search Ebay for the name of the Mic and you'll find the store front.

i'm already getting that at work, dude.

as i probably mentioned to you, the guy who pimped out one of my nady's used a tab-funkenwerk trafo. i heard it briefly and it sounded awesome. cinemag also makes a pretty close u-47 replacement and peluso is making some "bv-8p's" i have a peluso in one of my ubernady's

Did you guys see the hot-rodded Behringer tube micpre yet? Up on Ebay now. He claims it works better. Read his story.

I don't know if I would go for that. It probably voids the warrantee.

yeah i started a thread about that somewhere. much skepticism followed.

the seller posts those often and apparently has behri compressors modded the same way, but fwiw that ebay seller has an on-line store where he sells reconditioned and modded ribbon mics by steve sank that many swear by.

edit: fwiw- i firmly believe in modding chinese mics, i also firmly believe in modding oktavas, but i can't get behind the behringer pimpout :)

Ah, I can write first-hand about this Behringer mod. After speaking with him on the phone and emailing a couple of guys who had bought one, I purchased one back in January. I LOVE it. The guy who does the mods has his own site and is the real deal. He puts stickers on the top of the pre saying it has been modded with Brown Burrs. I use ribbons a lot, but the only thing I had to compare it to was my old VTB-1, which as well know Harvey had given the thumbs up as a great ribbon pre (the VTB-1). It does have more umph, less noise, and a more fuller sound than the VTB-1--and I really dug my VTB-1. Before I sold my VTB-1s (I had two), I did an A/B of the two, and there was really no comparison. With headphones on, simply hearing the room through the modded Behringer was an incredible difference. I fully back up the seller and highly recommend it. He's an honest guy who wants to help people and make money at the same time. Kinda rare.

While we are drastically off-topic, I will point out that the ART MPA Gold comes stock with BB OPA2134s, has full plate voltage and +75dB of gain, and is only $299 new with warranty . . . and it shouldn't cost $35 to ship, either.

Wow, that sounds like a good value. Do you think it sounds as good as this guy's berry? ...Or better? Are the Burr Browns all that? All I have is a few cheapo mic pres. Anything should sound better than them.

(I didn't mean to hijack this thread. I just figured since we have some time to kill, we might as well talk about ribbons and mic pres for ribbons.)

Speakin' of pres, I would love to hear more about the ones that Chance is talking about having a group buy for. Chance, is it your own design? I'm sure you're busy figuring out how much we all owe you (thanks again, by the way, for making some of my home studio dreams come true). When you have a minute, it would be great to hear about what you have planned (as well as the additional mics you mentioned elsewhere).

Once all the funds are in and transfered to China, I have some new mics, optical compressor, and mic pre that will be in the next GB all with the same savings as is displayed with this GB

Well . . . BBs are good opamps. You can't generalize about them though, because in the BB line TI probably makes 50 different opamps. The 2134 is a solid audio performer, nothing extremely sexy, but affordable, proven and stable. I have them either stock or modded in most of my gear.

Having said that, there is a lot of sales talk in that eBay listing. Now, I'm not gonna be the pot calling the kettle black, so I ain't going line by line. Suffice to say that the sound of a pre, especially a hybrid tube design, is not all opamp. the 2134 will be a big improvement from 4580, that I can guarantee. But I don't know the Behri's circuit to say if that makes a miraculous difference.

For example, the amount of gain is not a function of the opamp, that is set by the components in the circuit around the opamp. So if gain was increased, that is not a function of an opamp swap. Now CLEAN gain may have increased.

But I can also tell from the Behri's literature that there have to be other considerations. Behri says that the input stage is discrete, that could be a significant factor in the performance of the box. Or not, it's hard to say without digging in.

In any major mod, you've got to look at the power supply. Especially in Behri's case, where their gear is not noted for reliability.

If all of those pieces were considered in the mod, it could easily be worth the $100+ cost of the mod. If it's just an opamp swap . . . I am not sure, but I do suspect that the claim that no pre under $800 will compare is sales talk, not proven fact.

I have the ART Digital MPA, which is the Gold with a converter onboard. I have been using it almost daily for over a year, it's a solid versatile preamp. Nothing too glamorous, but it does what I need it to do. Without having used the modded Behri, I know from the switchable plate voltage on the ART that I'd really rather have full plate voltage.

I'll definitely be interested in that.

Chance,
Are you making anything of this GB.
I certainly hope you are.
If not how can we give you a donation for all your hard work and effort.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!
