My experience with duty and taxes into Canada from the US is that when I used USPS I never had to pay any, weather it was a gift or not. UPS and Fedex ground I had to pay brokerage fees, duty and 2 taxes. Very expensive.
Me likey USPS.
In my case I ordered 14 mics and 6 pres so for USPS it might have to be split into 2 or 3 boxes perhaps.

I just had a PM from someone from Canada and thought I would create a question. In all the last group buys that I ship to Canada (even other places outside of the USA), How do you guys pay the duty? As far as I can see and track, the packages go from me directly to you.

In Australia Duty and Taxes only apply after the total value of goods and shipping exceeds $1000. The last time I imported stuff from the US over this value the charges were billed by UPS and delivery was not forthcoming until paid.

Cheers
Peter

In a never ending quest to get the best rates, something came to mind. The point of origin. Is it me? Or is it China. For me to ship to you,, it would originate with me,, yes? Almost everything you buy today comes from China, so if I buy a mic from Guitar center that is made in China,, to me, the sale originates at Guitar center.
TnC is an American company and with the NAFTA agreements, there is no duty with products originating in the USA to Canada. Can someone clear this up?

Australia and USA also have a free trade agreement. However, only all American products with all American parts are included. So anything made in China doesn't count.

Who tells customs/Fedex/ups/usps it is made in china? Is it going to have a big sticker that says made in China? Far as customs are concered its coming from the USA and being sold by an American company..wouldn't that make it eligible under the free trade agreement?

My simple logic could be failing me however.

Customs will ask you. It's then your decision if you commit fraud or not. If they inspect the packages and investigate it may be worse than the 5% duty you will save. The GST still applies regardless of the FTA.

"Tomorrow is promised to no man" and I never know when my Maker will call me home.

Ahh... well, there's a happy thought.
Maybe we should all chip in and take out a life insurance policy on Chance. :p

If they decide to open the package(s), most definately - YES - they will have a made in China sticker on them, no doubt the inside boxes will have chinese writing on them as well. I suggest you find the cheapest way to ship and then play it above board and pay your government whatever is due. Not only will you potentially mess up your own shipment, but if customs in your country gets suspicious, possibly others shipments as well. If you ask Chance to say it's made in the USA, then you're asking him to commit fraud. Either way.....a bad scenario. Especially with 3000 units going all over the world.

Wouldn't even think of asking chance to say anything apart from what it is, wasn't even suggesting that. I've split my order and am having one shipped to a friend to avoid the duty anyway

This post is so old, with so many replies. What are you suppose to be buying at this point and for how much?

There you go. Thinking outside the box. I like it! Legal and legit, but under the radar!

Mongoo,

I think the details of this "buy" started around page 70 or thereabouts of this thread, with respect, I suggest you do what most of us have had to do and go back and start reading.

Better hurry though. It ends May 16th.

100. Realistically, it's not likely to be an issue.

We currently have 26.77% of orders paid.

The 73 is at 165 paid, so it is safe.
The 81 is at 91 paid.
The 84 is at 75 paid.

We can assume that additional orders will probably increase these numbers proportionally. As a quick check, 26.77% of the values would be 143, 100, and 80. So we're pretty much in the ballpark on all three, with the 73 a bit overly represented in the current set of purchases and the others slightly underrepresented.

So based on that, the 81 will be paid up after another 16 people pay, and the 84 will be paid up after another 48 people pay, give or take. That's 4% and 11% of the people who haven't paid. I'd be amazed if 89% of the people who haven't paid yet bail. :)

Of course, these are only approximate, but....

Now for hindsight. Let's see how I did. There were 163 people who had paid yesterday. 22 people have paid and we're way over on the 81.

We're 40% of the way there on the 84. My estimate was that it would be paid up after another 48 people paid, and 22 / .4 is about 55, so we're falling a little behind on the 84.

Either way, I figure another day or so and we'll reach the quota on the 84, too.

NAFTA hasn't helped at all on any of my purchases into Canada from the US. It was basically just selling us down the river. No such thing as free trade.
In the distant past if something was a "computer related music peripheral" it was duty free. I'll have to check on that and see if thats still the case.
