Guys, guys...

I believe that Chance has pumped me up to be something...that I'm not!
The only reason that I even considered "home mastering" in the first place, was that a few years back, a band that I was playing in, signed a record deal. The record company allowed me to record our own CDs...after hearing a sample of course. On our first CD, the record company sent out my mixes to some notable mastering houses, I won't mention any of their names here cause' I don't want to sound like I'm talking down on anyone's work, but a lot of the country music that you hear on the radio these days, have been through some of these houses...and believe me when I say that "they ain't cheap."
At any rate, I'd never had any of my mixed professionally mastered and I was quite excited that I was gonna finally hear one of my mixes, professionally mastered...
This first CD arrived back to me via FedEx, and I, as well as my other bandmates, and our friends and family that we let hear it, thought that it sounded better before we sent it to them... SO, the record company sent it back out again... Pretty much the same thing this time too, although it didn't sound any worse, it didn't sound any better... SO, the record company sent it back out again... Pretty much the same thing this time around too, although it didn't sound any worse, it didn't sound any better... Maybe I was just expecting too much....maybe my mix was bad... I don't really know for a fact...even to this day... I offered to the record label to let "a guy that I know" (myself, but they didn't know it at the time) try at mastering it, for free, they agreed, and I "did what I sounded good to me"... The record company liked it better than any of the other masters that we'd heard up to that point as well, and it was the version that was replicated to CD... I didn't take any mastering credits on the CD jacket (didn't want to feel like I was stepping on anyone's toes...and I'm not as famous as the guy that's on it!

)...but I did take credit for the engineering and and I also did the cover design, which I also got credit for on the jacket...
I will go onto say this as to clear up any confusion:
I know a few "famous" artists that use the same mastering houses that we tried, and their mixes come back sounding great... Which leads me to believe that maybe there might be a "fame factor" associated with how much time and effort gets spent on certain projects by some mastering houses...
Anyways, I just "HOME MASTER" my own music, and since I'd only mastered 1 other engineer's work other than mine, I asked Chance to let me give some of his tracks a shot...just for practice, and he did.
I know, I know... home mastering is like home dentistry... I've heard all of those lines and they probably are true... I just can't justify spending the extra cash for mastering, considering the results that I've had in the past...so I do my own...and so far, I've made myself happy...
I have the before and after of the track that I've worked on for Chance... Since it's his work, If he'll give approval to me, I'll make 2 clips for you to hear...
I'm sure that some of you might think that what I did sounds awful, and that's Ok... Some local "music people" around, think that my mixes sound terrible...and I think that theirs sound like bad AM radio... I just do my own thing, and do what sounds good to me...
Thanks!
Randy
