Xeries : Maybe you're just a little too close to it right now. Let it rest for a few days and when you come back, you'll find that the vox are as loud as they need to be.
Usually when a spoken word it in the forefront, the music is "ducked" like DJs do when they talk over music in commercials. The music is side chained to a compressor that lowers the music when the voice over comes in.
With this piece you haven't ducked it, so the volume needs to be that loud to allow for some headroom in the other instruments. For instance, the bass is so cool that I think it could come up at 1:23 and 2:45 after the stops. The rhythm git gets the whole stage there whereas I think the bass is the star of the show. Just my opinion.
But the vox are not too loud, again, just my opinion.
BTW nice transition at 3:37 from the lead break back to the rhythm bedrock. That ain't easy to do seamlessly and you nearly pulled it off.
I like this mix better. Cool as a moose.
Those are interesting points you bring up about the ducking and headroom for this type of vocal delivery....I would like to start paying a little more attention to the dynamics/detail of my mixes, rather then just the steamroller approach of one level all the way thru

Going to look at the bass guitar at those points you mentioned and mess with raising them as you suggested.
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!
joeym : Totally groovy Queep!
I love it! Love that bass-line you've got going on it. Recording sounds great. Great lyrics (did ya smoke something good....?). The distorted guitars towards the end sound murderously good, I wish you had more of them....
Totally cool stuff!
Joey
Thanks Joey....the whole thing came together around just messing around with the bass and some drum loops....no smoking at all.... just pent up boredom from being forced to interact with the 30-40 something yuppie ,playschool,PTA , soccer mom parent scene

...Glad ya dug it !
heatmiser : Yeah, this is sounding nice Queepster !
The bass sounds kick-ass! I like the sort of stripped down retro groove you have going here...simpler than a lot of your arrangements, which in this case is really nice. The lyrics are engaging and your voice is exceedingly clear here which is also a change in a sense.
I liked the guitar explosion 2/3rds through and the ending was cool. Nice job !
Hey Heatmiser, thanks for listening! I did actually spend a little time on the vocal sound pre recording...I usually just turn it on and let it rip, but this time I messed with EQ, mic placement, were I stood before I committed the second attempt to recording....I was kinda thinking that heavier part might be to much of a stretch from the vibe of the song up to that point, but it has kinda grew on me and I like it now...
greyharmonix : your songs are always fun to listen to. great guitar solo alot of shaking and bending. that suck you in sound at the end of the guitar solo is kinda like your staple sound. i've heard it before at the end of the scream in that bad ronald song right?
Wow, good memory, I did try for that same effect on "Bad Ronald"..I envision a sort of wall of sound build up to a crescendo that abruptly disappears...a kind of jarring effect, but for some reason, I really like it...thanks for the listen, glad ya dug it!
guitar zero :Queepy, YOU NAILED IT!!!!!
GZ
Thanks man...the feedback I get here helps so much!
bigbubba :Queepy, this is really cool from the start on thru.
The drums are very cool sounding. The bass tone is very nice. And that almost solo like bassline is very grooving. Did you play that yourself? Sounds like it would a lot of fun to play. My bass playing is very off time. But I'm hoping to spend more time.
And that screechin' solo, just rocks. Very nice contrast from the lyrics part. That lyrics have a groovy but open feel. And the solo part is full of stuff.
Very Cool.
Hey Bigbubba, thanks for the good word man! I did play the bass and guitars on this....been really digging playing the Bass since I was able to get my hands on such a fine quality instrument as
the Rickenbacker 4001 I'm now using....the roto-sound roundwound strings I put on it are sweet as well, and really effected my playing beyond what I ever thought...
ido1957 It all sounds good to me queepy. The bass rides nicely throughout and the groove is tight with the drums. The wah guitar and clean guitar compliment each other nicely. This is kinda Zappa but I found it more mainstream pop rock - which I prefer. The mix sounds great - vocals are perfect....
Now how do I get the ringing out of my ears from NL5's screamo intro????? lol
Thanks Idol! That wah thing is actually all one guitar, using a delay effect from my podxtl that adds the modulated sound to the echo from the original sound/tone...kinda quirky
