I dont need to know "which one to buy" because I will figure that out. I also am not asking "which is best" cause I find that a rather foolish question. What I am looking for is: how are the following pre's different in regards to sound. I record mostly alt/indie/hard rock
GreatRiver ME-2NV, Aurora GTQ2, Phoenix DRS-2

Question. Are these for a commercial studio? I hope so cos those are some big boy pres.

high pass filter on the Phoenix DRS-2 (or DRS-1)

Does anyone know the specs of that high pass filter? I can seem to find anything about it the freq cut-off....the only description I see is "on push button switch".

Also, is the Phoenix DRS-1 exactly the same as one channel of Phoenix DRS-2....like the Great River ME-NV1 and NV2??

I'm not sure it was all that clear, so to spell it out for clarity sake:

The GTQ2 is NOT a Neve copy.

It is also NOT an exact copy of the Neve 1064.

Also, I have no clue why Gordon Audio came into this discussion. Gordon Audio has NOTHING to do with the question. The Gordon Audio preamp is a supposidly "transparent" (Though it's also mentioned it has "punch" and "balls the size of Texas", so talk about a contradiction from what I can tell; but that's beside the point.) and the GTQ2 is most definitely "colored".

Correct - it is not a neve copy, just "neve inspired"
It is based around the Neve 1073 from my understanding - (e.g. has different frequency response, lower noise, etc.)
Oz had copied and pasted a comment that his buddy posted on another board - hence the reference to the Gordon
Thanks for the summarization RE. It was indeed getting quite messy

Whoa...

Interesting....the price of the DRS-1 at Mercenary just went up from $1050 to $1250 over the weekend. I've had my eye on it because it was in the same price range (actually $25 cheaper) as the Great River ME-NV1 and it has a HPF (the GR doesn't). I wonder why the price went up? That's a pretty significant increase. Was $1050 a typo or have I lost my mind?

Fletcher?

that was the holiday price....maybe if you email mercenary they will still give you the holiday price if you act fast

SWEET! It's back down to $1050. I hope it stays there until the end of this month.

Which holiday is this?!?

Simmons

Elvis's birthday... I wouldn't expect it to be at $1050 very long... like next week it could be back up where it belongs again.

hello, i'll add that today i just ordered a GTQ2 mark III(the new version) and it is heavily backordered. im around #9 on the list and my wait is about 3 months.

Recently I've been hearing rumors of the demise of Phoenix Audio... this could not be farther from the truth.

Phoenix Audio just inked a new deal for US distribution, and units will once again be flowing into the US at the proper pace... ROW [rest of world] distribution is what it is [I have no idea what that is], however the US distribution problem has been sorted out.

Just an FYI...

Fletcher,
Do you have any info on the Phoenix rack ears now that US distribution is now "flowing"? It would be really wonderful to rack my DRS-1.

just trade it in and get a DRS-2  when you get the money of course....

Make sure you keep us all posted on the GTQ2 Mk3 Teacher. Also - its good to know that Phoenix isnt dead at the moment...its good for everyone when companies making good gear are able to survive

Yeah. I love that pre so much, it was the first thought on my mind after I recorded with it (... I need two channels of this). I probably will go this way soon.

in fact when checking mercenary, 2 channels of drs-1 are cheaper then the drs-2 by 50 bucks...

Yeah, but the DRS-2 comes with an on off switch and the obvious advantage of one power supply/power cord. Plus, it's racked. $50 difference is a small price to pay for that IMO. I'll probably go this way before year's end.
