Greatest Rock singer of all time?

I'm supprized no one mentioned Ronald Belford "Bon" Scott (9 July 1946 – 19 February 1980)
That's because you are not a student or observer of the folly, whims and contradictions of human nature.

The only two serious contenders for this title are Ringo and Pavarotti.
But not necesarilly in that order.

Based on what criteria?

Lyricist? Dynamic Range? Belting Attitude?

Dynamic Range: Jeff Buckley - 3 octaves, hard to beat (#2: Freddie Mercury)
Belting Attitude: Janis Joplin (#2: Mick Jagger)
Lyricist: Ian Anderson (#2 Roger Waters)

Honorable mention ...

Master of "what do these lyrics mean?": Sting

Not that I don't like bands from AC/DC to Zeppelin... I just don't know how you would measure a singer without attitude, range, presence and composition. [I must admit, I was impressed by the person who tossed out Ringo... I've got "Blast from your Past" on vinyl somewhere around here...]

The best thing about threads like this is people aren't objective or reasonable at all.
Primarilly because the actual premise is ridiculous. It's like asking "What is the greatest meal of all time ? " or "which is the greatest year of all time ?" !

Lyricist? Dynamic Range? Belting Attitude?
None of these things have anything to do with how good a singer is. Although they might.
I just don't know how you would measure a singer without attitude, range, presence and composition.
You measure a singer in the most sensible way possible - irrationally ! You either like a singer or you don't. And you'll have your own reasons for doing so. And they're valid.
I must admit, I was impressed by the person who tossed out Ringo.......
I genuinely like Ringo Starr's voice when he was with the Beatles. Geoff Emerick says he always strained to keep on pitch. Well at least he tried !! No autotuning for Ringo ! Lennon and McCartney had their own solution - write songs in keys that didn't make him strain and keep the notes few and simple.
It wasn't rocket science.
If I was dictator of the world, I would eradicate the word 'greatest' from everyone's vocabulary. But in my more benevolent moments, I would simply outlaw "greatest", "of" "all" and "time" from showing up in the same sentence.
Unless I wanted my subjects to express themselves in some no holds barred arguing.

Everyone has named some great ones, I love 'em all, but I'm gonna have to go with Freddie Mercury.

Freddie is right up there... I think a good argument can be made for him. I've always enjoyed "Fat bottom girls" (the song too...)

Chris Cornell has incredible tone and range on the record, but his live performance is terrible. Buckley has incredible range, but his use of head voice thins out his tone a lot. Vedder has incredible tone, but his range is weak. Manmade God is a semi-underground band, but I have to say that as far as range AND tone go, their lead is incredible.

What's funny is that many of the posts are obviously just for humor, which is great, a lot appear to be legitimate artists that I have never heard of. I guess I'm not hip anymore :-(
