Great River ME-1NV and under $500 vocal mic

I'm going with a Great River pre, and I need a vocal mic for around 5 hun. Currently I've been using an Art Pro Channel with a Rode NT1 A. I cannot remedy the harsh sibilance without cutting highs way out. I've tried this combo with three different vocalists, yielding the same results. My vocalist is a screamer, but I will be tracking every genre from country to metal in my studio. I'm looking at Studio Projects T3, and the Rode NT2 with a high pass filter. Will the high pass filter cure the sibilance? Any comments on the Rode models?
 
...the SP T3 comes highly recommended in that price range...also, the Rode NTK (with upgraded Siemens 6922 tube to smooth out top end) is a "love it or hate it" choice...since the GR pre comes with it's own Neve-ish "colour", you might want to consider "cleaner" sounding mic options like the SE2200A, Rode NT2A or AT4050...as always, the best advice is to try before buying...SE does offer free trial periods on it's mics...
 
A high pass filter will do nothing to cure sibilance problems. A high pass filter is used to cut low end.........boominess if you will. Another mic to consider is
the MXL V69M. Or perhaps an ADK Hamburg. Both can be had for under $300.00.

What about shure KSM 44 ? Very vesatile and You can shop it on Ebay for about 500$.(I bought mine from muzik4sail store) It is fairly neutral and I use it with NV1 and it works great both on male and female vox, since You have many options with GR's range of colors.

I don't think the NTK or T3 are going to tame your sibilance problems, although they are great mics to consider for vocals. I would recommend the Shure SM7B or Electrovoice RE20 dynamics for screamers with sibilance issues.
 
Thanx everyone. Oddly enough, when my singer "screams", the esssss is not there. It's when he's actually singing when the sibilance occurs. Go figure. I've had a mellow folk voice in here, and had the sibillnce. I'm starting to lean towards the AT 4050. Anyone use the AT4050 on any other sound sources?
 
Actually, I find the 4050 rocks on everything BUT vox. That's just me though, others like it a lot. I prefer T3, NTK, SM7 and a Brauner
 
Two mics I've used on a variety of singers are the U195 and TLM 103. Neither have exhibited any siblance issues, though it is largely a singer's problem. Because you're buying such a nice pre, I think you should wait and go for a better mic.

CCS, tell me how you like the U195. I've heard good things about it. What's that "FAT" option on the mic? :p
 
Big Kenny, how do you like the 4050 closed miced on a 4x12, and what do you like about the T3 on vocals? Thanx! :D
 
Groove Tubes GT66 at the new reduced Guitar Center price of $399. It's a steal.

It's got the right balance between accurate and flattering. It seems to really smooth out any harshness in the highs without being overly dark. It doesn't really have the extra "zing" that a lot of the chinese condensers do either. It's hard to describe audio. :D I dunno, you got a Guitar Center around you? they should have one you can try.
 
SM-7b mates incredibly well with the GR preamp for male vox. I wish I had listened to the pro-dynamic mic lobby earlier, could have saved some mad cash.

I have a U195 too, and for "my voice" the SM7 takes it hands down. (still have plenty of uses for the U195).

U cant go wrong with the AT 4050. I was hesitating between KSM44 and AT 4050 as they suppose to be pretty same as for the sound (but personally I did not hear the AT) I only went with Shure cause it had a better shockmount. If You are on a tight budget, go with the AT.
