Well, are you going to tell us your impressions or do we guess?

Oh man...this is creepy. I typed a ms and when I posted, there's no msg at all! Must have got lost in transit! :D

Wel..i got the mixer for usd470. I guess the mic preamps are not on par with the new VLZpro series. Is that the only difference?

Right now I'm pretty overwhelmed by the plethora of routing options that I have! So many inputs , outputs, busses, aux sends and returns!

Sonically, it's really good, though the only thing I have to compare it with is my old samson mixer!

cheers!

Usually any Mackie is a good mixer. I've heard the 1604VLZ, but I don't like the pre-'s in it as much as my TASCAM M-1516.

I like dedicated tape returns too. I don't want to run a split console configuration.

Don't get me wrong, the pre-'s are great in the Mackie for on-board pre-'s. I've not auditioned the VLZ Pro. You have a lot of reading to catch up on I'll bet. After I auditioned a VLZ I downloaded a manual to look over. Lot's of reading.

What kind of recorder will you be using? Dare I hope for tape?

Nah, I'm still livin' in the '80's, must be a computer, right?

You hoped right! I am using a tape recorder (and a comp also...but thats so mundane ain't it?). Fostex R-8, followed by mixdown into Cakewalk for all the EQ and other miscellaneous effects!

Viva Analog!

cheers!

Wow, another analog head. That's good to hear.

Kind of a hybrid set-up huh? I mean with the Cakewalk and plug-in's and all.

I'm not familiar with the Fostex analog decks. Is that a 1/2" or 1/4" deck?

It's a 1/4" 8-track. Pretty decent for my level.

Well, hybrid is the way for me for now. Perhaps when I get more cash, I shall make that choice...analog or digital... :D

kartikbala,

Congrats on your new mixer.

I picked up the Mackie 1402 VLZ for $349...Mars close out.

I understand the routing options dilema...its nice to have flexibility and options but it can get overwhelming.

Now I also have another dilema for recording media.

So far I have just had a Yamaha cassette 4-tracker and no external mixer. Several months ago I picked up a GC open box Echo Darla 24/96 (wich was fried but repaired under warranty).

Now the problem...the PC is the family PC in the living room and I rarely have it to myself or quiet. The 4-tracker is in the bedroom in a homemade rack that blends with the furniture (wifes requirement).

At least I can mix and DI in the bedroom with the door shut and I will get much more time in. I could do some hybrid into the PC and roll my equipment into the living room but would only get to record 3 or 4 hours a month at most.

Wiring my rack for both possibilities with an unbalanced patchbay is a major nightmare.

Any ideas.

Scooter, sounds like it's time to ditch the wife. Then you could put all the gear in the living room and do whatever the hell you wanted ;)

TexRoadkill,

I can't say it hasn't crossed my mind ;) (or hers for that matter).

But for the sake of the kids and being a man of my word its on to plan B (which is really plan A with some unexpected complications to work out).

Hopefully in three to four years we can move to a bigger house with an additional spare bedroom for my stuff, the kids will be older and more independant...its in the plans but not the checking account yet.

Peace

I'd say....time to get another dedicated pc for yourself!! :D

cheers!

Send me the check and I'll be on my way....

I have been able to save a dollar here and there for small stuff and the mixer...but I think she would notice the PC!

I may look for something used though if I get some Christmas cash.:D
