Damned if I do
At my job, I'm currently digitizing Joe Glazer/Collector Records masters. I came across this one the other day. I haven't seen an Irish reel in quite awhile........

I see them very rarely on eBay... pretty cool looking. Nice BR-20, by the way.

I have this problem with reels though (artist, you know... lots of quirks)... I have to have my reels the same on my machine. That is, the take-up reel has to be the same basic design as the tape reel.

So, if I'm using Quantegy I put on my Classic Ampex/Quantegy Style take-up reel (Black or gun-metal gray depending on my mood). If I'm using the older 3M 226 (same as old AGFA/BASF style reel) I have to switch take-up reels to look the same. I have a third kind for the newer BASF/EMTEC reels as well. So if I’m using EMTEC 468 or 911, I have to use that reel.

Consequently, I can’t use a metal reel when I use 7” tapes because the only metal reels that look like the Ampex/Quantegy plastic reels with the two rectangular windage holes are really rare… made by RCA. I have a Maxell metal reel, but can only use that with Maxell tapes.

Anyone else troubled by tape reel asymmetry, or is it just me? :)

One of these days I'm going to find one of these RCA reels, remove the silk-screen RCA logo with lacquer thinner, and feel complete while recording with my 22-2. ;)

You're as "troubled" as I am with regards to the reels.... ;)

I admire your aesthetics, guys!

Here's another thing I've noticed lately: old Scotch 206 - smooth as silk; old Scotch 226 - sticky shed! :D
