I am fortunate to be working on a project with a couple good drummers for once....:) Been awhile really.

These are of course "push mixes". No eq, compression, limiting, reverb. No nothing. Just the faders turned up for the mix.



This guys name is Reinhardt Melz (I think I got his last name spelled correctly). Went to college with him for a year. His step father is Bobby Torres, who has played with a few named acts in his time....) Anyway, his specialty is Latin grooves. You think he has it down?



Brian Foxworth. Known this cat for a few years. He plays with everyone around town in the Blues/Funk/R&B genres. Always quick to smile, except when he messes up....:) Smooth cat.



A full "live" cut with just the Rhodes (actually a Whirlitzer electric piano), bass, and drums. So nice to hear dudes that can do a live cut without punch in's....:)

Forgot to add. That is Brian Foxworth on drums on Cyberporn.

Had to fix Rheinhardt's name spelling too. :)

This is great shit, Ed. I think I'll be listening to this for quite a while...

Diggin' CyberPorn now, oh yeah. Will make sure Brian (drummer brother) hears Thank You Sly, too. Have yet to hear the Latin number.

Wish Brian's drums sounded like that. Wish my BASS sounded like that! heh heh...

Bass player Dan is on that cut Kelly. Sorry, don't know his last name, he was hired for the gig. Great guy too, and one hell of a bass player! A joy to work with.

I need to add that primarily what you are hearing on the drums is:

Kick mic
Snare mic
Stereo overheads

There are three toms mics, but they are mixed so far back in the mix that they make little difference in the sound.

Signal path you ask?

Kick - EV RE-27 n/d to a ART pre.
Snare - Alesis GT AM-51 to a ART pre.
Overheads - AT 4033 to a TL Audio Classic pre with a dbx 166 comp/limiter behind the pre (no more than 2dB of gain reduction)
Toms - SM-57 to ART pre's.

All recorded on ADAT XT 20's.

Bass - DI Out of a SWR head to ART pre.

Piano - to a horrible Horizon DI box to Mackie preamp.

Just your average home studio signal path really.....

I put down my Producer and Engineer cap today and thoroughly enjoyed listening to those tracks Ed. I listened to Brian Foxworth like 20 times today. I really want to buy this CD when it's out. Keep me up to date on the mixes dude. Cheers!

Can you cut it down somehow to - up to 4 meg?

Even if it means encoding it to a low quality mp3. I'm interested in hearing them.
 
It pains me to degrade this even more than it is as a result of a very bad control room that colored the mix a lot. But for you Moshe, I will deliver....:)

Funny thing about this cut that I remember. We almost didn't get this take. The bass player hadn't jammed the song with the drummer before, and hadn't played with the band for over 5 months. He lives about a 2 hour drive for our area and has a full plate. He was pretty reluctant to try to track the song. We all chimed in and convinced him that he should at least give it a try....:) This was the third take the trio did. I was needless to say, FLOORED!!!

Great recordings!

I see that you like the Art preamps. What do you think about running vocals thru them or do you prefer just instruments thru them? I've got an AT3525 and want to know if you think I would be better off running my vocals to the pres on my Mackie board or to an Art pre? Sorry this is off topic.

I listened to the 'latin' mp3.

I usually don't like drummers getting all creative like that ("Dude, just sit in the groove, and furphuxache, keeps the fills to a minimum, alright?") but this guy makes it work when the rest of the band just sits in the groove. Nice in small doses. I first learned this musical truth listening to Ginger Baker many years ago. Never indulge the drummer. Not even the clever ones. :D

It's interesting to me that the push mix sounds low-end heavy. Is that usual?
 
The low end heavy thing is a result of a very bad control room to monitor in. Just from the dimensions of the room, and what I heard when I got these mixes home to my normal monitoring system, I would say there are standing waves in the room around 200Hz. Very bad....:(

Try out Cyberporn dobro for a full band treat. Yeah, it is a big file, but worth that wait I think....:)

I am using the Dual Mp.

I only used a Mackie preamp on the Rhodes. We are monitoring through an Alesis Studio 32 because it has an extra Pre Fader Aux Send for the headphone amp.

I didn't WANT to use a Mackie pre on the Rhodes, but it was the only preamp left, and the producer wanted the drums, bass, and Rhodes tracked "live", so I had to use it....:(

cyberporn - now *that's* drumming! If you had a drummer like that guy, you'd take it over loops every time. I like that piano playing too. Did I mention the bass player? These guys are REALLY good. Man, they all really L_E_A_N into it about 3.40! You can hear it coming, and by god they don't miss their chance. One of the cool things about the way mp3s loop is you can check tempo changes - this one's pretty much rock solid, I think.

Duderino, you were lucky to record this lot - what excellent, flying music. It's stuff like this that makes you understand why guys who are good enough to play jazz *do* play jazz. It's stuff like this that makes you understand why guys like Sting use their rep to get good jazzers to back them up.

I'm keeping this one. Let us know about the finished product. :)
 
Damn! Check out that business between the piano and drums from 2.13 - 2.17! Are those fuckers psychic?
