Hi all. Hope everyone is doing well out there. I have a rather broad question that I am hoping someone can help steer me in the right direction. I have managed to get my hands on a Tascam midistudio688. I have been able to play around with it a bit, just enough to get a an idea on how the basics work. I have been running directly into the console from a Boss ME20 guitar effects processor and have been able to do some basic track on track layering. I have 2x150w guitar amps, one a Pevey XXL and the other an Ibanez 150TBX. I want to start recording through my amps while running stereo outputs from the Boss effects processor. Now, first of a few questions I am going to try and get out there. What are the advantages/disadvantages of recording with mics vs direct lines from the amps also, any recomendations on solid/not a mortgage payment mics that I can use mostly for micing my guitar amps for recording and maybe a bit of vocals. I will mention that I am playing allot of metal/industrial/punk type stuff with heavy distortion.

I am also looking for some direction in terms of "laying" a song out in preperation for recording, what I am trying to say is how do I determine what is the best approach as far as selecting what parts t use for bed tracks I also have a Mackie CFX20 mixing board with built-in effects, what is the best way, if any to utilize this equipment. I have been playing for about 20 years but I am brand new at the home recrding deal so help with these questions or any advice you may have that you think helpful is always appreciated. Also, if there is any recomended reading material that anyone might think helpful with these questions or simply good reading for someone like me who is going at this from the ground up, please pass along the links. I thank you all in advance for the time taken to read this and any thought given to it. I hope to hear ya'll soon.

Take care.

Also, if anyone has a good resource for info about effect loops, how they work, how to set them up that wuld be cool as well. Again, much appreciated.

Hi darkster!
Direct signals from amps sound lifeless and too much in your face. The sound of your room and mic(s) has huge impact on sound.
The classic workshorse mic would be Shure sm57. However some others and I like the Audix i5 better, especially when micing guitar cabs and snare drums.

(Also don't forget to turn the overdrive down on your amps when you are recording. This can be the cause of thin guitar sound.)

this is a great time to experiment, and NOT follow the rules.

then, you find out your limits, the equipment limits, and then you'll know what you don't know...
and the questions get easier.
