Anyone have specific recommendations/experiences for studio recording a Martin HD28? It has a big bottom end that gets muddied up with a few different mics I have tried.

I get good results with my AT4040 at the bottom of the guitar and M Audio Luna pointed at the 12th fret. Stereo panned. I Have a Martin D series 15 I think, but it has some kind ofGuitar Center special model number for them. But I know exactly what you mean with Martins, very bottom and boom heavy.

pair of 81's at the 12th pointing away from the soundhole, pair of sdc's pointed there
That would be for well defined picking or dominant acoustic, for a blend in the mix you can stick a Large at the 12th pointing at fretboard and throw one up by you ear pointing at the soundhole (nice fill)

+1 I use an SM81 on my 30 year old D-35. On a good sounding guitar the 81's will deliver the goods.

I've also used an AT4040 at the bottom of the guitar and have had good results. I got better results with the AT4060 but that's much more expensive. For a sound up on the neck that you can blend with it, i worked with a producer that got good sounds using a shotgun mic pointed along the neck towards the sound hole. You can experiment with some different angles and distances to affect the sound.

What are the selection of mics at your disposal that you have to choose from ? Or are you asking for the purpose of purchasing some new/used mics ?

All good recomendations so far...I throw the KSM32 into the mix...AT4033 is also the type of mic that would pick up any acoustic great...even one that could be boomy.
