good mp3 encoder

i'm still looking for a nice mp3 encoder which creates useable low-fi files.
I have no problems with 128kbps stereo-files but I'm looking for an encoder which I can do very small files for "demo-demo purposes" with (maybe even mono).

any suggestions.

Lame.exe is a very nice codec.For a front end try lamebatch.

For 64Kbps encoding I've been very happy with the RCA mp3pro encoder. FREE.

charger: I've been using CDex / lame lately... I think it's quite fine but did you ever try to make a mono-file? It creates a file which is as big as a stereo-file.

drstawl: I just tried that one and thought "ok, that's quite a common 64kbps file" - I listened to it thru winamp.
then I listened to it thru the RCA player itself - wow, quite amazing.

I wonder how flash 5 compresses the audio. the files get damn small (ok, it's mono) and you still get a good idea of how the original file sounded.
 
Yeah, you have to change the settings for a mono file. Note that when you make a stereo, 128kbps MP3 file, that is actually equivalent to 2 mono 64kbps files. So if you switch the setting in CDEx to mono without changing the bit rate, you're going to get a file that's the same size. In this example, to get a mono file, switch the bit rate to 64 and set it to mono, and the quality will be the same, but the size will be approximately half.
 
I've played with many many encoder proggies, and the best one for me is RazorLame. It has a very easy to use interface, and every option you could ever need is available.

For distribution-size mp3s, I also prefer LAME with the RazorLAME frontend. With a bit of massaging, you can get even the teeniest-bitrate mp3s to sound pretty decent.

They used sonic diagrams to compare how closely different mp3 encoders can recreate the original .wav, at different bitrates.
 
thanks for the link, eurythmic. quite interesting for the "math-heads" ;).

I guess for the "check-out-the-song-not-the-mix"-purpose I stick to lame's 16kbps mono encoding. that's pretty low, isn't it? but the files get amazingly small!

I think lames is THE enoder anyway.

mp3pro is a great thing too of course though I can't really believe that 64kbps will sound as good as former 128kbps...
it seems comparable to taking a soundfile, make a high cut at 5000 Hz and then boost the high shelve eq at 5000 Hz... that won't sound like the original file.

anyway. there will be a time when we send 5 minute, 88.2 Khz, 32 Bit wav-files (how big would that be?) over the net in minutes.

I agree with Bruce here. Audio Active rocks. I have a hardware version made by Teleos I got from a radio station. The software is the fastest and cleanest I've seen yet.
